Waxman to former Bush Chief: You'll talk on the Daily Show, but not to me? (SUBPOENAES coming!)

Rep. Henry Waxman announced today that he'll consider issuing four subpoenas in a meeting this coming Wednesday, April 25. In a letter to one subpoena target, the Oversight Committee Chairman complained that a former White House Chief of Staff appeared on Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show,' but has so far refused to testify before his committee.

"On April 16,2007, you appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and discussed the leak of Wilson's identity," Waxman (D-CA) wrote to Andrew Card, the former White House Chief of Staff. " Fielding's position appears to be that it is appropriate for you to discuss these matters on The Daily Show, but not before a congressional committee. You will not be surprised to learn that I take a different view of this matter."

Card served as Bush's chief of staff from the President's inauguration until April 2006. In March, Waxman sought "an on-the-record interview regarding the disclosure of Ms. Wilson's covert identity and the White House procedures for handling classified information," with Card.

But the White House Counsel rejected the request because "former senior White House officials such as the Chief of Staff to the President have historically not been available to Congress to testify, or to be interviewed, about their activities in serving the President," according to the Congressman's letter.

Wow!

5. I like the way the Dems are approaching this. Giving all the creeps plenty of time to VOLUNTARILY

show up.

Only after pleading for VOLUNTARY appearances a few times then they get nailed with the subpoena.

If the Dems went after them from the get-go with subpoenaes, it would give the rwingnuts and the M$M more fuel for the "witch hunt" meme.

10. Agree. The strategy worked. Now SEND THE G**DAMM SUBPOENAS DAMMIT!

They've had plenty of time to comply voluntarily and hence they can't really use the "witch hunt" argument. Any other delay serves no purpose. SEND THE SUBPOENAS NOW.

6. You know, now that this has come up...

I was really bothered that Jon didn't take the opportunity to ask Card exactly what it was he whispered in Bush's ear on 9/11.

I know that I believe it to be "Sir, we're under attack" -- but I'm not certain of why or how I think I know that (maybe I have the same problem as Gonzo??)

Has Card ever gone on the record himself about what he said to Bush in that classroom?

I know that's what Card reportedly said, but I wonder if Card himself has documented what his words were.
