How do presidential candidates develop their lists to seek support?

How do presidential candidates develop their lists to seek support?
I was wondering since I get some candidate requests and others I never hear from. I also have a question for Obama supporters. What's the best way to get in touch with him, the campaign or senate office?

1. I've written to his contact on the 08 campaign site and have gotten answered
within the day. Probably staff but, it's worth sending it. He also has suggestions section for his issues. Like policy suggestions especially regarding health care.

2. Thanks for your suggestions.
The weeding out or in process is more difficult for me these days in that my trust is smaller than it use to be in politicians. Currently, I like Dennis for his politics and desire for bush administration accountability, Richardson for his outstanding skill sets, and Obama for his mind (currently reading "The Audacity of Hope" and am finding myself like minded about many things). As far as candidates contacting me first in some manner from this current field, it's been Richardson and Obama with the mailings.
