House passes bill to add attacks on gays to hate crime law; White House threatens veto

JIM ABRAMS | AP | May 3, 2007 01:58 PM EST

WASHINGTON — Just hours after the White House issued a veto threat Thursday, the House voted to add gender and sexual orientation to the categories covered by federal hate crimes law.

The House legislation, passed 237-180, also makes it easier for federal law enforcement to take part in or assist local prosecutions involving bias-motivated attacks. Similar legislation is also moving through the Senate, setting the stage for another veto showdown with President Bush.

"This is an important vote of conscience, of a statement of what America is, a society that understands that we accept differences," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.

UPDATE: I totally missed Pelosi hugging Barney after the vote, you can check it out here.

That is an outstanding tally.

Watch an openly gay member of Congress announce the final tally :-) There is still hope for America

5. Because, anything that promotes, helps or otherwise doesn't backhand the GLBT community
flies in the face of *'s bullshit beliefs and the beliefs of whatever cretins still make up his "base". It's apparently the proper "christian" thing to do to slam the door in the face of your brothers and sisters based on the quackery you misinterpreted from a book. "I'll pray for you, but otherwise go fuck yourself" is a piss-poor mantra.

8. Well, Bush can veto it, if he wants to generate even more grief and
hatred. That would make his vetoes the trifecta, which he loves so much. Bush can go down in history as the pres who vetoed stem cell research, the timeline for leaving a disastrous war of his liking and making and the rejection of hate against gays. Boy, that should place him right down there in the icy lakes of the Inferno with Dante's Judas and Brutus and Cassius.

11. It is not uniting-it is called circling the wagons.
