WASHINGTON (AFP) - Talks between US lawmakers and President
George W. Bush's administration have produced the outlines of a
"grand bargain" on the politically red hot issue of immigration
reform, a Republican senator said Tuesday.

"We have come to an agreement on what we have called a, quote,
'grand bargain', unquote, which is the outline of an immigration
bill," said Senator Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Senate
Judiciary committee.

But he said the final text of the compromise still had to be worked
out and called on Democratic Senate Majority leader Harry Reid to
postpone the opening of a debate on the issue scheduled for next
week.

Reid however said that debate would start as scheduled and would
go on for two weeks, saying there was no issue apart from
healthcare, Iraq and high gas prices which more concerned the
American people.
