Breaking: Feingold proposes bill to end the war, cut off funding (Bradblog)
Edited on Tue May-08-07 10:59 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
There is a thread by Bradblog in the LBN forum (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2839181) but this is such huge news that I believe it warranted a GD thread. Let's hope all Democrats hold firm and show leadership to end the war. Enough of the rhetoric, enough grandstanding, enough band-aid measures. Now is the time to show leadership and end George Bush's war.

So far the only presidential candidate who has signed onto the bill is Chris Dodd. John Kerry and Ted Kennedy are both notable co-sponsors of the bill.

==In a statement just sent to The BRAD BLOG, Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) says he is prepared to up the ante in the fight with the White House in light of Bush's spending bill veto, and will be proposing that war funding be cut off by a date certain.

Feingold adds that his proposed legislation has a number of co-sponsors already on board in the Senate. His statement just in to The BRAD BLOG:
“With brave Americans fighting and dying for a failed policy in Iraq, members of Congress shouldn’t delay action to end this misguided war for weeks or even months just for the sake of political comfort. That is why, when the Senate takes up the Iraq supplemental, I plan to offer the Feingold-Reid bill as an amendment to force the President to safely redeploy our troops by March 31, 2008 at which point funding for the war would be cut off.”

In addition to Reid's commitment to support the bill, the co-sponsors already on board as listed at Feingold's website include Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chris Dodd (D-CT), Tom Harkin (D-IA), Ted Kennedy (D-MA), John Kerry (D-MA), Pat Leahy (D-VT), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).==

1. Go Russ go
It is not the military that is keeping our illegal war in Iraq going nor is it
the dems in Congress failing to "help" the troops.

It is George W Bush who is keeping the war going.

2. Why is this considered breaking. I have read this weeks
before about controlling the purse strings. I would love some real action on this bill. To bring the troops home is no. one with me.

3. Not Gonna Happen.
An active, insane war is far too useful for the craven triangulator branch of the Democratic Party. So what if a few thousand more troops and a few hundred thousand more Iraqis die, we spend another trillion or two, and deplete our military.
