So all this talk of "Unity '08" is really not all that independent
and not all that bi-partisan...

The talk is that an "independent" ticket of Mike Bloomberg and Chuck Hegel is being bandied about...

Nothing independent about that one, just republicans who let their party get away from them...

Mike "leans" toward the corporate side of the blotter and Chuck, well he is a life long republican so we really know he would run as an independent just because he can't get through the GOP primaries...

THere was some talk of Gore/Hegel, but I can't see Chuck playing second fiddle to someone who is so vilified by the right...

So, Eleanor Clift has written about it, and so has Howard Fineman...

Oh and get this one, Joe Lieberman and Chuck Hagel...

The point HF made was that since the nomination for both party's could be all but confirmed as soon as early February and with seven long months of a political vacuum before the convention, dissatisfaction and buyer remorse could come into play for all Americans, HF's words, not mine...

So what do you all think of this Unity '08...

Is it bullshit or something to worry about....

Me, I don't want Bloomberg running as an independent....

He left the democratic party to run as a republican for mayor, I look at him as nothing more than a political opprotunist...

Hegel, not strong enough and if he is talking to Jumping Joe the human Dynamo (yea right), his fate is sealed....

And I do not think Gore would run as an independent, his problem is not with the democratic party....

What is it really all about???

Me, I think it's a couple of political writers who are already sick and tired of the all the bullshit that their profession has had a major hand in creating and have nothing more to write about...

1. I don't see Gore running as an independent. If Hagel splits the R's, it might be
away to introduce more parties into our system, which I believe would be a good thing.

2. I read that Howard Fineman thing today on MSNBC--
He talked about Gore going third party--why would Gore do that to his beloved Democratic party? I can't see that happening. If Gore had wanted to, he certainly could have run as a "D" with NO problem--that's why I don't think he'll run, or he'd be in the race already. Hagel and Lieberman? Supposedly they are friends, but they have diametrically opposing foreign policy views, and Joe is political poison. Bloomberg and Hagel? One of them would have to change to an "I" or "D" to team up for Unity '08, but they would complement each other and be a strong ticket--bad news all around, IMO. I don't know if Unity '08 will get any traction, but Fineman surprised me by saying it wouldn't be that hard for an Indie to win--I've been told here it was near-impossible.

4. Further proof - as if any were needed - that Howard Fineman
knows as much about politics as our cats. Sad thing is that anyone would pay him money to spout his utterly ignorant and nonsensical opinions.

5. Sometimes he has good insights--I like him in Newsweek and on
Tweety's show. He comes up with some goofy shit, though, on MSNBC--that must be the stuff that Newsweek's editors reject.

3. Non-starter, non-issue
I think you nailed it when you said "not all that bi-partisan...". It's a desperation gambit by people who know their time is up. They can drag names like Gore or Tinkerbell or Grover Cleveland or whoever into their pitiful attempt at discourse all they want, but they're dreamin'.

6. I haven't been over there in a while--when are they planning to
choose their ticket? Does anyone know offhand?

7. Interesting Comment in Fineman Column
Edited on Wed May-09-07 12:56 AM by democrat2thecore
"Indeed, although there is no formal alliance, Schwarzenegger, Bloomberg and Gore have formed a mutual admiration society that has huge potential implications for 2008. They have come to share similar visions on the urgency of the global warming and health care crises, and a similar impatience with politics as usual."

"This could be the year of the Third Force."

on edit: "The year of the Third Force" Remember when we first read this from Howard Fineman. Very possible, people.
