Global warming explanation I just heard.
This from a person from which all explanations date back to the middle ages.

See Al Gore is nuts (that is what started his diatribe) they had 350 years of great weather in Europe, in fact they had vineyards in England!! Then the Roman Empire fell and bad weather hit. Then half of everyone in England died from the plague (they had as many people living in England in the 1300's as they did in the 1850's) so the problem is more cyclical than anything else.

They have vineyards in England again now and we have had a great run of weather but it is almost over-maybe 15 years left.

I just sat there stunned. I couldn't answer for another reason but I was almost sure than rather than implying it he was actually going to claim that the Roman Empire had control of the weather.

1. Sure.
If you look at everything else they believe, it all fits.

4. I forgot the part about the poles
Something about how hot air and cold air goes between the poles. He wasn't sure exactly how it went but trust him it really brought the whole thing together.

This started with him asking what Tropical Storm Andrea was.

...to witness that much stupidity first hand. We have a few like that in my family, I am always left speechless.

Cheers

3. I dont think many scientists disagree with that, they just say we are speeding it a lot.
It will be here in 15 years because of us as opposed to say 1000.

Edited on Wed May-09-07 03:08 PM by mnhtnbb
but, of course, he'll probably tell you they've only been around 6000 years
so it may be a first, right?

7. It's not widely known, but the Romans invented Daylight Savings Time
Edited on Wed May-09-07 03:37 PM by slackmaster
In order to improve crop yields, on several occasions they arbitrarily decided to turn DST on earlier in the spring, and off later in the fall just as the US Congress did for this year.

You can get away with that twice, maybe three times at best before the resulting time imbalance triggers another Ice Age.

I recommend buying beachfront land in Florida NOW before it gets inundated, because in another 75 years or so it will be high and dry with a terrific ocean view.

8. One of you is getting cause and effect backward.

I doubt he meant the fall of the Roman Empire led to a drop in the temperature. I suspect he meant a drop in the temperature was a factor in the fall of the Roman Empire. As the climate cooled and growing seasons compressed, northern tribes migrated south and conquered Roman territory.

Temperatures today are still cooler than they were at the beginning of the Roman Republic.

10. The Fall of the Roman Empire did not create the "Little Ice Age"
Krakatoa exploded in the early 1400's and the ash sent into the atmosphere is what many scientist think caused the "Little Ice Age" that lasted 500 years, from the 1400's to the early 20th century. Krakatoa explosion again in the 1880's and it also affected our weather through the 1940's.

Yes, England did have vineyards in the 1300's until the Little Ice Age happened, but while the Great Ice Age had been retreating for thousands of years, scientific evidence since the 1960's has proven that C02 emissions have increased dramatically and most are caused by humans. Humans have increased the rate of global warming dramatically. It has been documented and peer reviewed, and that is why no credible scientist disputes that global warming is increasing at a dramatic rate and is mostly caused by humans.

That could be entertainment.

12. Ask 'Em If They Believe In Young Earth Geology!
More pointedly, ask 'em if they believe in so-called "Young Earth" geology. Just asking someone whether they believe in evolution or not allows them a chance to cop out, but asking them if they believe in "Young Earth" geology is a far more effective way of nailing down these folks as full-blown Bah-bul-based creationists.

14. Explanations Might Not Be Needed
Explanations might not be needed. The tele-vangelicals pushing full-blown creationism are also the same guys pushing "Young Earth" geology, and I suspect that their audience knows what that is.
