Pro-Life Republican Accused of Shifting Views on Abortion
By RICK KLEIN
May 9, 2007—

Former governor Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, gave a $150 donation to the abortion-rights group Planned Parenthood in 1994, at a time that Romney considered himself to be effectively "pro-choice," the Romney campaign confirmed today.

Campaign spokesman Kevin Madden said Mrs. Romney has no recollection of the circumstances under which she donated the money.

He said an internal review of Romney's personal records have not turned up any instances where Romney, R-Mass., himself sent money to groups that support expanded abortion rights.

"The governor has not donated to Planned Parenthood or abortion-rights groups," Madden said.

Madden said he did not know whether the former governor was aware of the donation, but he noted that Romney was publicly committed to upholding a woman's right to an abortion until late 2004.

"This is an issue that the governor has changed his position on, that the governor was wrong on in the past and believes he is right on now," he said.

14. The church is not anti-Roe V Wade
Edited on Wed May-09-07 07:48 PM by FreeState
"...counsels its members not to submit to or perform an abortion except in the rare cases where, in the opinion of competent medical counsel, the life or good health of the mother is seriously endangered or where the pregnancy was caused by rape and produces serious emotional trauma in the mother. Even then it should be done only after counseling with the local presiding priesthood authority and after receiving divine confirmation through prayer."

The church teaches it should not be used for birth control but it should be legal for life/health of mother, rape and incest - all would be illegal if the republicans had their way.

5. good for her
So am I correct in thinking that this makes him the third of the three leading Republican candidates who used to be pro-choice?

If Chuck Hagel doesn't run, the religious-right turnout ought to be pretty low.

8. Planned Parenthood does a lot more than just abortions
They provide health care and contraception for low-income women without health insurance. I had to go there for check-ups at several points in my life.

If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have had my borderline high blood pressure diagnosed.

Good for Mrs. Romney for her contribution to women's health.

9. You are correct, only about 2% of Planned Parenthood's budget is spent on abortion services...
Planned Parenthood is an organization dedicated to REDUCING the number of abortions in the US. Yes, they do help some women get abortions if they feel there is no other way out but they would much rather prevent them from getting pregnant in the first place. That is why one of their primary focuses is on contraceptives. They are doing far more to prevent abortions than the religious right ever will.

Good for Ms. Romney, even if I would never want her to be first lady I can be proud of her for her charitable giving.
