Test - which candidate do you match up best with?
Another imperfect test (like how could Paul be above Richardson, and why is Edwards so low,) but here's how it came out for the candidates (from fits me best to fits me worst) -

Kucinich
Sharpton
Obama
Dodd
Biden
Clinton
Edwards
Paul
Richardson
Giuliani
Huckabee
Brownback
Gilmore
Romney
McCain
Thompson
Tancredo
Hunter

Here's the test:

5. Bill Richardson

These little quizes may not be spot on, but they're kinda fun to take!

60. That test is more accurate but always seems to rank Obama high.
Someone posted a link to it earlier and it placed Obama at the top for almost everyone. However, it's not a bad match for me. It ranked Obama followed by Richardson and those are my two top choices. I'm leaning more towards Richardson now but would be very pleased with Obama.

80. IMHO, it's because Obama hasn't released as many details.
He's mainly made generalized policy statements and is slowly filling in the details. If Selectsmart updates the test based on recent positions announced by Obama, it'll probably make the test more accurate. The Speakout test in the OP is based on the ontheissues.org site which has some inaccurate and dated material about the candidate's current positions.

4. Very cool site! Nice to have all those issues compiled w/ candidates records.
I ended up with my second choice, but it was very close. I was surprised to find large percentage matches in one area with candidates I otherwise strongly disagreed with in the other areas.

The best part, though, is being able to read the candidates' statements on the issues and look at the various actions they've taken in support or opposition.

Good job!

appreciatively,
Bright

29. There was one question that I'm not sure I answered correctly
It was the one about requiring hiring more women and minorities. I chose "oppose" because I'm against quotas and strict requirements - but it turns out reading it more in depth, there are things related to that issue that I support. My results wouldn't be changed much and I'm not sure how the site would answer that question for me, so I'll leave the results the way they are.

Many of the questions were easy for me, like strong opposition to the death penalty, supporting funding health care more, removing troops from Iraq, etc.

Then Hillary, then Edwards, then Obama.

Then again, they don't factor competence, intelligence, or electability into the mix, so you've got to think about that when you look at your results.

25. Not bad
I got Kucinich-Sharpton-Clinton-Dodd-Obama-Biden-Edwards - no great surprises there, except maybe the order Clinton-Obama and Biden-Edwards. Not much on foreign policy, I noticed (there's more to international relations than trade, military spending and occupying other people's countries, amazingly enough) - though I doubt it'd have changed the order much.

Richardson came down among the Republicans barely ahead of Ron Paul at 25%. Hmm...

I am not terribly surprised with my results, or with the many who are coming up Kucinich. This community seems quite left of center, and I know I am especially left-leaning on economic issues. My main man came up #1 -- I would have been shocked if it had been anyone else. Not surprised that Clinton came in where she did, I am a liberal, after all. :D I was surprised Obama came in so high at third, saddened that Edwards came in so low, and shocked that Richardson is so very far away from my beliefs (I had been open to looking at him as a candidate).

35. This is biased. First, why Sharpton but no Gravel? Second, why are some candidates' old votes on
issues where they no longer support that position counted in evaluating the candidate but for other candidates old votes are not counted.

For example, Kucinich is great on every issue you could think of but - once upon a time - he was anti-choice (he's subsequently seen the light and he is now totally pro-choice) and yet Kucinich's old anti-choice votes are not counted against his social liberal score. That's fair because Kucinich is no longer anti-choice so why count his old votes against him?

On the other hand, Richardson was once questionable on gay rights (DOMA etc.) but to his great credit Richardson has really turned around on that issue and he's been quite good on that issue more recently but Richardson's past votes are still counted his social liberal score. That's not really fair on two levels: (1) why count Richardson's old votes against him because he is now much better on gay rights and (2) why are Richardson's old votes considered when Kucinish's aren't?

There is no justification with not counting Kucinich's old votes which he had disavowed but counting Richardson's old votes which he has disavowed against him.

This poll counts Obama more liberal than he is (because he voted more liberal in the Illinois state legislature when he represented a very liberal district than he is now in the Senate where he represents the whole state) and Edwards less liberal than he is (because it counts some of his conservative votes from when he was a North Carolina Senator even though he has come around on some of those issues).

With that said, the poll is right about the most important issue: if you are a true progressive, Kucinich is your candidate!

43. Its Not The Test Thats Screwy .... Its the Candidates ...
Most of these tests rate your answers against the candidates voting records ... Most of the 20 something candidates are running campaigns that are highlighting stuff they have never had an interest in legislating. If you put up a list of candidates campaign proposals side by side with their past legislative agendas you would never be able to match the two lists up.
Thus your results make little sense unless you select your candidate on what they have done and not what they are now saying.

44. Kucinich -- but I already knew that!

He's the only one I believe will end the war. The others who say they'll end it are too beholden to corporate sponsors and I think it will be Nixon Redux if one of them wins. Nixon, remember, promised to end the war in Viet Nam but didn't and in fact bombed Cambodia and sent troops into Laos as well. Saved villages by destroying them, things like that.

46. A couple big surprises for me:
Dennis Kucinich
Al Sharpton
Hillary Clinton
Chris Dodd
Barack Obama
Joe Biden
John Edwards
Ron Paul
Bill Richardson
Rudy Giuliani
Mike Huckabee
Jim Gilmore
John McCain
Tommy Thompson
Sam Brownback
Mitt Romney
Tom Tancredo
Duncan Hunter

I'm surprised that Hillary comes in third, while Obama comes in fifth. Then again, I suppose they should be 2nd and 4th, respectively — I don't know why Sharpton's on the list.

47. There's one problem with the quiz.
It treats all issues equally.

That said, mine came up with Kucinich, Sharpton, and Dodd as the top 3. While my political beliefs might be in line with some of that, I certainly do not like the way Kucinich and Sharpton conduct themselves and would not vote for them under any circumstances. I guess I'd consider Dodd, but, meh.

48. Try emphasizing your views ...
with weighting, strongly agree versus sort of agree ...
Only vote strong opinions about things you feel are most important to you. If you dont really care about one of them but still have an opinion try leaving that question nuetral ... It might help some.

58. The test is based on the on-the-issues.org site
Some of the stuff on that site is dated or just plain wrong. For example they have Edwards strongly supporting increased military spending based on his 2004 positions. They have Richardson opposing granting path to citizenship for undocumented workers and opposed to increasing immigration which is the exact opposite of his position. I got Biden as my top pick based on this test followed by Clinton.

I support Edwards, who is way down the list, only ahead of Richardson among Democrats. No matter, I like Edwards because I think he has the best chance to win a general election, not issue by issue. Get a Democrat in office and I'll take my chances.

Joe Biden
Dennis Kucinich

63. a political quiz doesn't always match my vote..
but I voted for Kucinich in 2004, and he got the highest ranking 50% in my results.

I agreed with Sharpton, Biden, Obama, and Kucinich the most on economic issues, with Richardson and Dodd most on the social issues. Of the Republicans I agreed with Paul, Giuliani, Romney, and Hunter most often on the social issues, I agreed with Huckabee, McCain, and Tommy Thompson most often on the economic issues.

but no one on my list was higher than 43%. i guess that's fair since i don't like any of the candidates much.

Edited on Sat May-12-07 12:28 PM by dave_p
... Doesn't that tell you something?

I got "Kucinich". But I'd already worked that out.

No, I'm not saying back the guy because a test said so.

I'm saying check your candidate's policies. Read between the lines. Read the small print. Read what's missing.

Then see what the candidates you've written off have to say - not just Kucinich, but others too.

Then ask who wrote them off. And ask if you're satisfied with that.

83. I have the same order of the candidates as you
The high liberal scores for Clinton surprised me, too. I mean, since the test scored me as 85% in common with Kucinich and called me a hard-core liberal, I was surprised at how much I had in common with Clinton. Perhaps it's because she seems to project herself as more moderate than most of the other Democratic candidates, so my perception of where she stands has been off.

My lowest rating was with Tancredo with whom I scored 3%, and I'm a bit disappointed as I would have been more satisfied with 0%!

Kucinich 85%
Sharpton 75%
Clinton 65%
Dodd 63%
Edwards 55%
Obama 53%
Biden 53%
Paul 33%
Richardson 23%

The rest:

Ghouliani 20%
Gilmore 18%
Romney 15%
McCain 15%
Thompson 13%
Huckabee 10%
Brownback 10%
Hunter 5%
Tancredo 3%

84. Hard Core Liberal
I matched up best with Kucinich followed by Sharpton, Dodd, then Clinton

I had a 67% economic match with Kucinich and a 67% social match with Dodd. I know I match closest with Kucinich, but I also know the vast majority of Americans are no where near as liberal as I am. I really just want us to pick the person with the best chance of winning, because our worst candidate is heads and sholders better than their best!
