You would think they would have learned their lesson from their refusal to oppose the Authorization to Use Military Force.
Lobbying for impeachment is an intervention. As we fight to rescue the Constitution, we are also fighting to save the impeachophobes on the hill from themselves. They may resist us, but I think they actually WANT to do the right thing. They sure don't look very happy when they are forced defend their refusal to act. (How often to we hear "I personally would love to see them impeached, but. . .")
Ultimately though, it is not about them. It is a fight for our own self-respect. I for one want to be able to tell my nieces and nephews about the countless acts, large and small
- that made the impeachment of Bush and Cheney, and their resulting resignations, a reality, OR
- that made the impeachment of Bush and Cheney, and their removal by the Senate, a reality, OR
- that made the impeachment of Bush and Cheney are reality -- a victory that, although it did not result in removal, broke the bond of complicity for those who stood with the accusers, OR
- that finally woke up the nation up to reality when the 2/3rds of the 111th Senate judged Bush and Cheney guilty "in absentia" of intolerable crimes against our constitutional democracy OR
- that continue, and will continue until the nation confronts the truth and repairs our broken constitution by impeaching Bush and Cheney "in absentia."
We cannot know the future until it is behind us. The only thing we know is that we can't shape that future if we don't try.
