Winner: Hillary Clinton

Bob Shrum, Democratic debates

Hillary Clinton was superb in saying what she would do if the US was the subject of a terrorist attack- Attack back.

Note to Barack Obama: When asked about America’s three most important allies, don’t forget about Israel.

Joe Biden had the best moment of the night when asked if he was verbose and whether he could avoid gaffs he gave a one-word answer: Yes. It was sharp, funny, and the time limits were Biden’s friend.

Winner: Hillary Clinton

Winner among the second tier: Joe Biden- seemed genuinely presidential.

Didn’t seem to be there very much: Barack Obama

No hits, no runs, no errors: John Edwards

Will post his thoughts on tonight's debate when they become available.

His article on Kerry's regrets about Edwards has been reposted ad nauseum. Scroll down the latest page and it appears at least twice.

just jumping on Shrum's bandwagon.... I have a hard time thinking they don't know exactly who Shrum is and how incredibly unreliable, dishonest and manipulative....But, perhaps a few don't...

On edit, I have no problem with Pro- Hilary, Obama, or Edwards folks... I'm immensely on the sidelines right now... Just seeking to be an honest broker in the debates at this point...

The thing about this is that ALL of it is politics.

I can understand people not trusting Shrum, but can't the same question be asked of Edwards? He's flip-flopped on nearly every issue he held as a senator.

Neither Shrum nor Edwards seems ultimately reliable to me.

so other comments he has made in the past about John Edwards and John Kerry were to attract media attention.(and it worked) to promote his book.....I think he is more closely aligned with Republicans..A Joe Lieberman type.......

4. Matters more what SC voters thought

and they gave it to Obama, probably because he said the Confederate flag belongs in a museum. Of course, half the primary voters in South Carolina are black and that remark probably flew over Shrum's aging white head.

Note to Mr. Oh-for-7 in presidential elections: Obama was there and the primary voters of South Carolina liked what they saw.

6. Shrum would do well to read what Fareed Zakaria wrote in this week's Newsweek on Obama's answer...

In the South Carolina presidential debate, when candidates were asked how they would respond to another terror strike, they promptly vowed to attack, retaliate and blast the hell out of, well, somebody. Barack Obama, the only one to answer differently, quickly realized his political vulnerability and dutifully threatened retaliation as well. After the debate, his opponents leaked furiously that his original response proved he didn't have the fortitude to be president.

In fact, Obama's initial response was the right one. He said that the first thing he would do was make sure that the emergency response was effective, then ensure we had the best intelligence possible to figure out who had caused the attack, and then move with allies to dismantle the network responsible.

17. I knew I wasn't nuts...Fareed had it spot on correct on Obama's answer...

...as for the others, the kneejerk answer to "attack" showed precisely what is wrong with the so-called "War on Terror".

If the template for the chest-beating answer was true, we would have obliterated Saudi Arabia and Egypt if you believe the whole 9/11 hijacker story.

and go get THEM.

for some reason, Edwards nailing this answer has never been mentioned.

I don't have the transcript, but if I recall correctly, Edwards gave the right answer - immediately.

He was the opposite of knee-jerk.
