Bernstein Cites Unnamed Sources in Craven, Nasty Hillary Bio
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 01:57 PM by wyldwolf
What Bernstein presents as psychological portraiture is on a level with Hollywood's discovery of Freud in the '50s. He thinks he's offering a revelation when he asserts that Hillary Clinton's upbringing wasn't as nurturing as she painted it in her memoir.

The high standard of Bernstein's Watergate collaboration with Bob Woodward has deteriorated into a journalistic culture that makes no distinction between personal peccadillo and constitutional crime. When Bernstein repeats unsourced gossip, he participates in that degradation.

When the history of chutzpah is written, there will be a special chapter for Carl Bernstein, a man ready to pass judgment on Bill Clinton's philandering even after Bernstein's own ex- wife, Nora Ephron, famously caricatured him in her novel ``Heartburn'' as ``capable of having sex with a Venetian blind.''

The more sensational allegations (Bill sporting nail marks on his face after an argument with Hillary; the couple's divorce papers being removed from deputy White House counsel Vincent Foster's office after his suicide) are either credited to unnamed sources or acknowledged as unproved. How convenient: Bernstein makes a show of skepticism but gets the juice out of them anyway.

Perhaps the most telling moment in the book is a sly dig at Sidney Blumenthal -- the political writer who went to work as a Clinton aide (and whose book ``The Clinton Wars'' is a devastating portrait of Washington press cravenness) -- as ``once a journalist of some distinction.'' Speak for yourself, bub.

7. Mann's bio of KathHepburn relied on TONS of "anonymous" sources to argue she was gay.
This kind of thing is happening all the time in non-fiction. Especially biographies.

Never trust a book that is about a dead movie star, no national security issues are involved, that rely so much on anonymous sources. Why? Unless they aren't valid.

Hell, he even lied about the contents of a public document - her FBI file...and the lazy ass press LOVED it! They marveled at all the "new" information!

Shows why movie reviewers should stick to reviewing movies and not non-fiction books.

ps. Who knows if Hepburn tried it with women, but she wasn't gay.

Hillary’s War

By JEFF GERTH and DON VAN NATTA Jr.

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s decisions on Iraq may point to what sort of president she would be.

I've ordered the book, but have yet to receive it till June 7th.
