Dean Smith: I support John Edwards
==Posted: Jun. 8 5:03 p.m.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The party has all the North Carolina charm: a pig roast, pie and Dean Smith. And for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, it's also a chance to cash in on his 54th birthday.

Smith will be among the Edwards birthday revelers visiting on Sunday. The legendary former University of North Carolina basketball coach, who spent 36 years with the Tar Heels until 1997, said he will attend Edwards' party, calling him "the best person to lead this country."

"John's ideals are ones that are close to my heart and ones that I've fought for all my life," Smith wrote in a letter to Edwards supporters. "I support John Edwards because he has worked on issues that matter - ones that I really care about - like poverty and ending the war in Iraq."==

==In 36 years at UNC Chapel Hill, Smith compiled 879 wins - now the second most in NCAA history. Smith has also remained active in politics. He supported Edwards in his 2004 bid for the White House and has donated money to past presidential prospects such as Howard Dean and Bill Bradley.==

1. Which Ideals Is He Referring To?
Creating poverty with his vote for job-obliterating 'free' trade with China and work for a predatory lending hedge fund, and his co-sponsoring the war with Iraq? Or his suddenly-found love of "heppin' the lil' guy", and getting out of the catastrophic ear he played a key roll in starting?

4. *Both* Bankruptcy Bills... And
both "Patriot" Acts.

What a prize he is, "heppin' the lil' guy".

8. Edwards wrote the Sunset clause of the Patriot Act.
Edwards: "Like a lot of Democrats, I voted for a bankruptcy reform bill before. I can't say it more simply than this: I was wrong."

10. Apologizing is Nice, I Suppose
But being correct the first time, on fundamental issues that are pretty simple choices, is much, much better.

No?

5. So who exactly is anti-Democrat
The candidate who votes for the Iraq War, free trade and bankruptcy bills or the person who dare point it out?

I think you may want to reconsider who the douchebag may be.

than you are not looking at his platform.

deride his past all you want, but do not stay blind to what his offering today - the most classic Democratic platform in decades.

19. I wasn't speaking of his platform, I was speaking of his past
and I named three instances where I disagreed with him.

Ok?

I am well aware that what he says today is populist, and I like it...And I do like the man.

But, as with most every politician, his past tells a different story than his present.

20. yes, true, in the examples you cite
and it's fair to evaluate in terms of the past, but also to see the past through the lens of how a person changes, moves forward, takes control.

26. He hasn't DONE anything.
He voted FOR the Iraq War, FOR the Bankruptcy bill and FOR the Patriot Act. He then quit his job and has been a professional candidate since then, trying to gloss over what he did. He hasn't DONE anything since then, he has just changed what he is SAYING because it is politically necessary to run for Prez.

He has 'changed' in much the same way as a person on trial 'changes' their opinion of their crime during a trial. Only his crime is the bills he backed and his trial is the election.

I like the guy as a man, but I don't trust him too much to deliver on all of this populist shit he talks about. He's a Bilderberger after all.

7. Perhaps you could post a comparative list for us, showing for ...
each primary candidate in 2004 and in 2008:

(1) the history of their Iraq war stands;
(2) the market value of the various homes they have lived in during the last twenty years; and
(3) their annual wardrobe and grooming costs for each year in this century

Then we will have a basis for comparison. For extra credit, you can explain why each of these issues is of importance

12. Bad Judgment Is Bad Judgment - We Would Not Want A Repeat Performance
As evidenced by the current holder of the office.

Admittedly his bad judgment is of stellar proportions.

13. And John Kerry?
Get the point?

Edwards is being punished for this only because he legitimately cares about poverty and the middle class. The rest get a pass from the moutpieces for inequality because evening out the disparities between the top and bottom isn't a prime concern for those other politicians.

Along with the house, what candidate for President who has a chance of winning is not wealthy? Spewing RW talking points only makes me think you watch Fox Noise, 24/7.

a simple, honest endorsement from a truly great American (read about him if you don't know the story - amazing, amazing man)....and we have a thread of outrage that such a heinous, vile man as Edwards should deign to run for office.

and while you're at it, while don't you slime HRC, too...

if any of us here were half the person Dean Smith is, it would be a better place.

shheeesshh.

24. I love Dean Smith.
I'm a huge college basketball fan and have always respected Dean Smith. The guy is not only the greatest coach ever, he's probably the most kind hearted, selfless human being on this planet. How he fused athletics and humanity together was remarkable and he definitely stands up for what he believes in.

Smith has been an outspoken critic of the Iraq War, nuclear weapons, the prison system, homophobia and just about every liberal social cause known to man. It's a shame the North Carolina Democratic Party could never persuade him to run for office, because he would make one hell of an elected official.

Along with Rupp (sadly, even though he was a racist), Bobby Knight, Jack Gardner (my personal favorite), Don Haskins and a bunch of others.
