War widow following her heart to Iraq (enlists 2 months after husband killed in Iraq)

The Army so desperately needs recruits that they accepted this
woman. When you read her words you cannot help but think
suicide mission. This is tragic.

Eddie Garvin was a 19-year-old Marine lance corporal. He
joined the Marines to raise money so he and his wife Melissa
could move to California and open a bar/restaurant.

Melissa begged him not to go to Iraq.

He was not anxious to go to Iraq, but had no choice.

Eddie went to Iraq in September. He was killed in October by
a roadside bomb.

In December, Garvin joined the Army to be a combat medic.

Her parents and his parents are horrified the Army would have
accepted her.

"She realizes that being a medic does not protect her
from threats. Iraq is a war without fronts. But she says she
is not afraid.

"When your biggest fear comes true, which is what
happened to my husband, nothing else makes you nervous,"
Garvin said."

The statement that made me the most nervous --

"Whenever it is my time, I'll be reunited with my prince.
So, my death won't be in vain."

3. In the West Bank, Hamas turns grief-stricken people like her into suicide bombers
She would be a prime candidate for recruitment.

7. I was just thinking this very thing when I read that article!
I find it distressing in the extreme that this war has turned this country into everything we are told our "enemies" are.

4. Had I been her recruiter, her motives for joining would have been
very troubling for me. I'm surprised they didn't reject her for psychological reasons. This reminds me of the old Indian custom of suttee, where the widow would throw herself on her husband's funeral pyre.

6. How could they have accepted her?
Her psychological state must be, at best, fragile.
She just lost her husband!

And yes, it does sound like a suicide mission.
Or worse, a chance for revenge.

8. She is a threat to the safety of other soldiers in Iraq if she is allowed to deploy
If she is suicidal, she might act reckless and endanger not only herself but the lives of fellow soldiers around her. Send her home. There's enough blood and death without risking more.

12. Huh........
I found this noble and inspiring, my wife is former Army and she told me if I am killed in Iraq she would do the same..........My son will hopefully be joining in a few years just in time to serve with his old man on my last tour before retirement..........

I salute this woman, she is true to herself and her husbands memory.........

:patriot:

I have to write her name down, maybe I'll run into her in Iraq or somewhere stateside and I can shake her hand for being so noble............

13. There seems to be some not so subtle sexism in this thread

If the tables were turned and it was a female who died and her husband that then enlisted to be a medic, would there be posts referring to him as "fragile" and suggesting that he won't "hold up".

Kinda doubt it.
