Oregon Church backs immigrant families in wake of raid

04:14 PM MST on Wednesday, June 13, 2007

By DAVID KROUGH, kgw.com Staff and The Associated Press

OREGON - Temporary employees arrived Wednesday at a local food processing plant after an immigration raid Tuesday netted 167 illegal workers -- an operation that angered Portland’s Catholic Archdiocese and the mayor.

The Archbishop of Portland John Vlazny issued a statement Wednesday concerning the raid. He called the raid "an affront to a nation whose tradition has always welcomed the stranger in search of the security and livelihood which he cannot find in the country of his origin."

Federal agents raided offices of American Staffing Resources and a Fresh Del Monte Produce plant in North Portland looking for evidence of illegal workers and identification fraud.

Mayor Tom Potter said he was angered by the operation and added that he supported three ID theft arrests, but not the seizure of the workers.

“To go after local workers who are here to support their families while filling the demands of local businesses for their labor is bad policy,” Potter said in a statement.

A local union president however, defended the raid, saying the business was doing what amounted to taking jubs away from oregonians by hiring illegal workers.

2. Food processing work outsourced to Mexico?
Tom Chaimberlain of the Oregon AFL/CIO said that many of the
locals jobs in food processing have been outsourced to Mexico.
How can that be; someone explain or are there errors in David
Kraugh's reporting. To out source food processing jobs means
that Oregon would have to send its crops to Mexico, have them
processed there, and then return the product to Oregon.
Frankly why would anyone go through all that trouble? Is it
true or is it a lie. I know that if someone "turns
in," "identifies," or "accuses," a
person of being an "illegal alien" to the INS they
have to investigate. I know of hard working people who were
turned in by their neighbors because they didn't want to live
next to them who were deported and their land sold at auction
by the city and belongings picked up by Good Will for sale to
the public. The AFL/CIO is just wrong on this issue and the
Diocese of Oregon and the Mayor have every right to protest.
My word to Illegals is beware of your neighbors; they may turn
you in like the Nazis to the Jews.

3. The story quotes a local union president

The AFL-CIO has been supportive of immigrant rights. Not all unions belong to the AFL-CIO like the Teamsters for example.
