USINPAC Sends Letter to Senator Obama Regarding Allegations of Indian American Stereotyping

6/15/2007

Release Date: June 15, 2007

WASHINGTON : United States India Political Action Committee Chairman Sanjay Puri sent a letter asking Senator Obama to respond to recent allegations reported by the media that his presidential campaign staff has been promoting hurtful stereotypes against the Indian American community.

In the letter Chairman Puri states, "As representatives of the Indian American community, we have been encouraged by your message of inclusion and your promise to bring a new kind of politics to our country. This is why we are so concerned about media reports indicating your staff may be engaging in the worst kind of anti Indian American stereotyping."

Furthermore, Chairman Puri asks, "We request that you respond directly to these media reports and let us know if indeed your staff is promoting these hurtful stereotypes. We trust that you will take all appropriate action on this matter and look forward to your response on this issue of great concern to the Indian American community.

1. It appears the Indians are more concerned about Obama's racist remarks..
more than who leaked Obama's meme...which seems to be getting more play at DU than the racism issue causing this firestorm.
The Indians are looking for a personal apology from Obama. Will they get it, or will they get a "sorry for our TONE meme.." as has become Obama's trademark..never taking responsibility for his covert actions, sending campaign spokespeople out front as a gesture of acknowledgment ?

I daresay, the Indians won't let this go. They are angry with good cause, as they should be, as Obama would be, if overt racism was directed at him.

2. Thanks.
You just gave me another reason to vote for Obama, and not Hillary.

3. I'll never let his racism go. You are damn right I am angry
Excellent point on how Obama would react if such was directed at him. He sure doesn't mind using it against others to further is ambition, though.

We are the Democratic Party. We should not nominate someone who uses racism as a political strategy.

5. Tellurian, I am South Asian, can you specify what was racist in the memo?
Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 03:34 PM by TeamJordan23
I agree the tone of the memo should have been different and it might lead to some stereotypes, but stereotypes do not equal racism. I am South-Asian but did not find anything racist in the memo. Nothing in USINPAC accuses Obama of being a racist either, they just argue that it plays to stereotypes.

So what was racist about them?

6. I am South Asian too and have spelled out why it is racist numerous times
Playing on racist stereotypes is racist for a campaign btw.

Refer to one of the long threads the day the news broke and you will see why many people--including people of all colors--thought what Obama did was racist.

7. When Hillary stereotyped Indians as working at gas stations with her Gandhi comment, was she racist?
Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 04:10 PM by TeamJordan23
It would fall under as racial stereotyping under your racist definition.

Does this make Hillary a racist also? I don't, how about you?
