White House denies prior knowledge of Abu Ghraib abuse

Sun Jun 17, 5:08 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House on Sunday insisted
that President George W. Bush learned about abuse at Iraq's
Abu Ghraib prison from media reports, refuting a former top
general's assertion that Bush likely knew about the scandal
before it broke.

"The President said over three years ago that he first saw
the pictures of the abuse on television," said White House
spokesman Scott Stanzel in Crawford, Texas, where Bush is
spending the weekend at his ranch.

Stanzel was responding to questions about a New Yorker
magazine report quoting the top military investigator of
the Abu Ghraib scandal, retired Army Major General Antonio
Taguba, as saying "the president had to be aware" of the
abuse of prisoners by US military guards at the facility.

In the magazine interview, Taguba also said former defense
secretary Donald Rumsfeld had initially denied knowledge of
the lurid photographs of prisoner abuse, when he met him on
May 6, 2004, two months after the scandal broke.

At best, Taguba said, "Rumsfeld was in denial ... The
photographs were available to him -- if he wanted to see them."

1. Considering their track record on truth telling, all I can say
is, "Sure you didn't know." :sarcasm:

3. Of course he knew..
Gonzales was in charge of writing language into the Pats Act II outlining terms and definitions of those terms. The Military Tribunal was also written in at the same time, giving Bush sole authority for issuing arrest warrants and punishment sans trial. I believe, a Federal Judge just overturned that section of the Pat ActII last week in a stunning defeat for Bush. The Bush people are taking it to the Appeals Court to overturn the lower court's decision. We'll have to wait and see how the Appeals Judge feels about that...if he'd denied there...next will be dragging it to the SCOTUS...

If they didn't know, then why did Gonzo need to play legalistic Twister to try & come up with a way to make it seem legal - beforehand?

5. They did know..
and the reason they wrote their own rules. Anyone that interested can probably google Abu Graib and backtrack to the point of the expose and get all the info as to how it was done. Basically, if you read Gonzales' Pat Act I+II..it's all in there.
