Where is Hillary's Health Care Plan? She's Recieved Almost A Million From Health Care Industry
Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 11:39 PM by cryingshame
How much money has she soaked in from pharmaceutical and health insurance industries?

"Two days later, the New York Times carried a piece entitled, “Once an enemy, health industry warms to Clinton.” The article noted that Clinton has received $854,462 in campaign funding from the health care industry, the largest amount that the pharmaceutical giants, HMOs and hospital groups have doled out to any politician, with the exception of Senator Rick Santorum, the right-wing Republican from Pennsylvania."

from the very industries that are holding America's health hostage.

34. I am shocked, shocked I tell you, to learn that
health care industry companies, with a high concentration in New York, were donating to the re-election campaign of an incumbent NY Senator with no significant opposition, who has also made herself somewhat of an expert on health care issues and sits on the Senate HELP committee. It makes no sense.

48. Yeah
I simply don't trust her on this now. Anyone that takes that much money from medical insurance companies cannot be trusted.

Would I trust a supposed pro union candidate that took money from the National Association of Manufacturers? No.

Maybe this is why she has such a financial leg up on her competitors? Is she willing to take money from anyone and everyone?

Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 01:38 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
In other words, the same things Obama supporters are criticizing HRC for apply to Obama. This is another instance of Obama supporters criticizing HRC for something without looking at their own candidate's record (see: outsourcing).

Of course, there is one thing about HRC on health care that we can't overlook. 1994. HRC is not stupid. She is going to craft a plan that she thinks can pass this time. We have no reason to have such reassurance about the Mystery Candidate with no real record.

The bottom line is this: HRC favors universal health care; Obama (D-Madison Avenue) does not...

40. Where were you when the had the meeting about Health Care
One of the democrats site put up the health care plans that all the candidates had proposed.

They said they were not a fan of Hillary Clinton. But HER PLAN WAS THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE of all the plans proposed. They also said, for the information of those who wanted Obamas, that he had no viable plan at that time. This was around the first of the year. When I find the link, I'll post it.

People are so darn quick to take what the republican press posts without researching it. The best candidate Edwards is not getting a chance.

25. Thats wrongheaded thinking...
Haven't you ever been to a Bar-B-Q where there are neighbors there you don't like? Sure, you raise a bottle of beer in their direction, smile and mumble under your breath. Do you invite them to your home and break bread with them at your own dinner table? Absolutely-effen-not!

It's the same thing, only on a grander scale. You keep your friends close; your enemies closer. (they do not eat at your dinner table.) If they come to your door; they either stand on the stoop or in the hallway. If you have business with them, you meet them outside the family framework.

Just as her husband signed into law the Telecomunications Act of 1996, which solidified the corporate power over the media, Hillary will get signed into law a bill that will NOT give us a single payer health insurance system.

37. I find that to be offensive and just mean.
You have no idea why she stood by him and you act like it's a bad thing that she did. Any couple that goes through difficult situations will likely evaluate the totality of their situation and make decisions based on that. How many times do we hear that couples stay together for the sake of the kids, or some other family situation.

"Has made him just like her"? What does that even mean?

I know Bill and GHW Bush have a professional relationship, but are they really good buddies? HRC too? This is new to me, and to be honest, I'm not sure it matters to me even if they are. By that rationale we would continue the Bush doctrine of ignoring everyone who we don't like or agree with. The bully mentality. That has not served us well internationally, and it is the antithesis of our domestic democracy. We may not like the Bushes, but they are part of the game and must be dealt with. Isn't it possible that sometimes some good will rub off on the bad guys once in a while?

Once an Enemy, Health Industry Warms to Clinton
By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ and ROBERT PEAR
Published: July 12, 2006

When she tried to overhaul the nation’s health care system as first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton alienated some people and institutions in the health care industry by championing a huge expansion of the federal role. She provoked a fierce reaction from the industry, which mocked her proposal in television advertisements and dispatched lobbyists who ultimately helped kill the plan.

But times change. As she runs for re-election to the Senate from New York this year and lays the groundwork for a possible presidential bid in 2008, Mrs. Clinton is receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from doctors, hospitals, drug manufacturers and insurers. Nationwide, she is the No. 2 recipient of donations from the industry, trailing only Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, a member of the Republican leadership.

Some of the same interests that tried to derail Mrs. Clinton’s health care overhaul are providing support for her Senate re-election bid. The Health Insurance Association of America ran the famous “Harry and Louise” commercials mocking the Clinton health care plan as impenetrably complex. Some companies that were members of that group are now donating to Mrs. Clinton.

Charles N. Kahn III, a Republican who was executive vice president of the Health Insurance Association in 1993 and 1994, now works with the senator on some issues as president of the Federation of American Hospitals, a lobby for hospital companies like HCA and Tenet. He describes his battles with the first lady as “ancient history,” and he said health care executives were contributing to her now because “she is extremely knowledgeable about health care and has become a Congressional leader on the issue.”

Senator Clinton has received $150,600 in contributions from insurance and pharmaceutical companies, which she accused in 1993 of “price gouging” and “unconscionable profiteering.”

19. HRC will be unveiling a UNIVERSAL (unlike Obama) health plan in the coming weeks
Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 02:31 AM by draft_mario_cuomo
It's unfair to attack HRC for not having a plan out based on some arbitrary deadline set by Obama supporters. Let's wait and see what she proposes. Her campaign has emphatically stated that her plan will offer universal health care. Obama's Third Way plan will, under a rosy scenario, leave 15 million Americans uninsured. It is time for real change, not rhetoric. We should have universal health care, not a Third Way plan that leaves 15, 17, or 20 million Americans uninsured. That is unacceptable. It is the audacity of arrogance for the millionaire Obama to propose leaving over 15 million Americans without the health care that he enjoys.

His constituents have a healthcare plan available, if they can afford it. Adults pay $40/mo and children under 3 are free.

If you have 2 teenagers, that would be $160/mo for a family with an income of $25,000. Wondering if there's any money left for food?

58. That is why I admire her discipline...
besides meeting and greeting. She is gathering information on a cross-section of America's Health Care needs..and will be correlating her information according to priorities. Off the top of my head, I would say: "Pre-existing conditions" are high up on the list as designated uninsured by Ins Co unwilling to cover treatment costs. This becomes a big financial drain for the people needing treatment to live a somewhat normal life.

33. I don't agree..
Corporations need the cooperation of the Executive branch. Bush has been getting "his" rewards through the exorbitant salaries paid to the CEO's of huge corporations..Their salaries are in the $20+M/yr range w/perks, stocks, retirement. Bush has made it possible for them to receive these huge salaries but he doesn't do it for gratis. At campaign time, they have to kick in heavy green and it's not up to them to decide how much...he's "the decider" remember?

I believe Hillary is going to turn the tables on them..They can't operate without her and the FDA. All that slush money can easily be passed on to the people in the way of savings and affordability. And well, those CEO's are just going to have to come back down to earth..with reality..She'd going to get her Health Care pkg passed.

35. I don't think we disagree on this.
As far as I can tell, this O.P. is innuendo, unsaid but implied that by taking their money she will "owe" them something, and assuming that's automatically a bad thing. Big donors often get a seat at the table. We may not like it, but that's the way it is. But just because they get a seat doesn't mean they get their way.

Not only that, there should be no scandal with a sitting senator from NY taking insurance/provider money during a re-election campaign in which she had no significant opponent, especially since she has become somewhat of an expert on health care issues.

I'm just asking if someone wants to make an accusation, then lay it our and we can talk about it.

50. Yes Where the H is it? We need to be informed voters - with 18,000 people dying..
This excerpt from David Sirota’s book, Careless Industry: How corporate America perpetuates the health care crisis, says it all!

The Institute of Medicine was created by Congress in 1970 to be the chief, nonpartisan adviser to the federal government on all matters related to health care. That’s why the announcement it made in 2004 was so stunning. “Lack of health insurance causes roughly 18,000 unnecessary deaths every year in the United States,” the Institute said.

In 2003, HMOs nearly doubled their profits from just a year before, adding $10 billion to their bottom line. That year, top executives at the 11 largest health insurers made a combined $85 million in one year. In the first three quarters of 2004, HMO profits increased by another 33 percent.

The sheer numbers behind these profits are staggering: In 2004 alone, the four biggest health insurance companies reported $100 billion in revenues. That’s $273 million a day, every day, 365 days of the year. ….That’s the kind of cash that allowed the health industry to spend more than $300 million on lobbying in 2003, and another $300 million on campaign contributions to politicians since 2000.

if you haven't already..then got to Hillary's official Senate website. She has been putting legislation in place for Health Care, since the first day she stepped into the Senate that have already passed. She has a plan not yet revealed, if she rises to the presidency for Universal Health Care. That is where she needs to be to make it all work.

56. Isn't this cool?
Despite all our bickering, we are actually DISCUSSING health care.....something that hasn't happened in the Bush administration at ALL!

I wonder if Republican blogs are doing the same?

Putting aside all our differences, I'm glad the topic is front and center finally.

61. Frankly, I'd bet Senator Clinton can beat just about any other candidate on health care
She studied the hell out of the issue in the mid-90's.

The real reason we didn't get a major reform from that effort is simply -- Gingrich warned the Rs that a successful D healthcare reform plan would cost Rs Congress for a generation. The now-Senator's work was at that time subjected to an extensive rightwing noise attack, carefully coordinated with the industry.

Since I like Edwards a lot, I won't be supporting Senator Clinton in the primary season. But I think it is important to realize who was pushing health-care reform a decade ago and exactly what happened to that effort. Attacking Senator Clinton on this issue is unfair, uninformed and unwise.
