Petraeus, Gates, and Snow paraphrased. And by the way, Petraeus is a dunce.
(I culled these paragraphs from two recent Washington Post articles. All emphasis and sarcasm is mine.)

Asserting steady, albeit slow, military and political progress, (Gen. David H.) Petraeus said that the "many, many challenges" would not be resolved "in a year or even two years." Similar counterinsurgency operations, he said, citing Britain's experience in Northern Ireland, "have gone at least nine or 10 years."

(Britain's experience in Northern Ireland consisted of nine or 10 years, General? Absolutely right, aside from being completely free of facts. What astounding ignorance!)

Moving along…

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and White House spokesman Tony Snow both recently made comments indicating that the administration is thinking along the same lines as military officials here. Snow has likened the possible long-term mission of U.S. troops in Iraq to the protective role American forces have played in South Korea since the end of the Korean War 54 years ago.

So, we’re talking about another 10-50 years in Iraq, and the low end of the range stems from Petraeus’ completely bogus analogy based on his stunning ignorance of the history of Northern Ireland.

This being the case, waiting for Petraeus to submit his report in September serves what purpose?

Darn, I must stop posing those rhetorical questions.

1. been saying it
it's not a surge, not even temporary anything... it's Operation Drag and Dump

drag it out until jan'09 and dump it on someone else

Your Rhetorical question: "This being the case, waiting for Petraeus to submit his report in September serves what purpose?"

answer: gets the mis-administration temporarially off the hook, as the response to any blather about how bad things are going in Iraq is 'we don't have an accurate report yet, won't be accurate until September"

3. Which raises the next question--will the 2008 winner (presumably a Dem) be a one-term and out Pres?
Analogy time--what normally happens in NJ state politics is that the Republican party digs a hole, loses an election to a Democrat who has to take unpopular steps to fill the hole and gets pilloried in the next election.

So assuming that W. dumps the Iraq debacle on a Democrat--Hillary, Obama, Edwards or whoever--there would need to be some serious improvement within four years or that Democrat is going down in 2012. And the situation is so bad that significant improvement within four years may not be possible.

2. In September, they'll say they see the "seeds" of progress,
but it's too early to expect much... They're going to need another 6 months just to assess the beginning of the surge.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

It's a stall tactic, so Bush can pretend he isn't an American president who lost a war.
