GOP's Romney surges in early voting states
POSTED: 8:37 a.m. EDT, June 18, 2007

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Forget the national polls for Mitt Romney.

Slowly, methodically, the Republican presidential contender has seized the advantage in the early states that count, relying on a solid organization, $4 million in advertising and an aggressive approach.

It's propelled him to the top of polls in the caucus and primary sites of Iowa and New Hampshire, and laid the foundation for what some analysts argue is greater success. (Watch how Romney's changing stance on abortion has attracted controversy )

Romney continues to trail former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and even former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee -- who has yet to formally declare his candidacy -- in national polls of the Republican contenders.

The path is far from easy for Romney, who has been dogged by criticism that he has switched positions on abortion, embryonic stem cell research and gay rights -- issues critical with GOP conservatives. He also is vying to become the first Mormon president, a potential problem with Southern evangelicals who consider the faith a cult.

1. Telling ya, it's gonna be Mittens. F. Thompson is but a mere (but big, entertaining) distraction.
Romney is smart, ambitious, determined, organized, and methodical. He doesn't have a "day job", like Freddie--he is foaming at the mouth to be Prez, and became Governor of Massachusetts for the sole purpose of this goal. And he's not a lazy SOB.

2. I think Romney is the best compromise for Republicans.
They can't stand McCain. Guiliani is full of shit. There's no one else worthwhile after that.
