Elizabeth Edwards Is First National Candidate Or Spouse To Appear At Gay Pride Event
God, I hope this woman gets to be First Lady.

Elizabeth Edwards' scheduled appearance Sunday at a major San Francisco Gay Pride event represents a first for a major presidential candidate or spouse -- one that activists said reflects the growing clout of gay and lesbians as voters and their continued move into the political mainstream.

Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards, is scheduled to speak Sunday morning at the Alice B. Toklas Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Democratic Club breakfast at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Organizers say it marks the highest level of presidential campaigning at the annual Gay Pride Parade.

"It certainly is another barrier falling,'' said author and gay activist David Mixner, a Clinton administration adviser who backs Edwards in the 2008 race.

"There's been a taboo on any (candidate)-related Gay Pride events,'' he said, with major presidential hopefuls steering away because the event has been viewed largely in the mainstream media as a no-holds-barred celebration of the gay lifestyle.

2. Thank you ELIZABETH! :)
this reaffirms my support for Edwards.. I was wobbling a little, but to see her do this is great! To go along with John's pro union, worker, help for the poor and other policy backings, he should be #1, imo in ratings, I can't believe Hillary is so far ahead, although I wouldn't hate a Hillary presidency at all, it's just I feel there's several better out there, Clark, Gore, and Edwards to name a few, and Kooch.. I can't leave out Kooch... not so sure about Obama, he'd be one of the youngest ever, right? I hope that doesn't hurt him if he's the nominee (we all know being black will hurt some, but we don't know how much, I know Dems who have said they won't vote for him, and yes, they're Dems by normal measure, although rather racist when it comes to trusting a qualified black man, I mean, Bush doesn't make white guys look too good if you view it THAT way!)

9. I LOVE Elizabeth Edwards, And Maybe She Is The First At THIS Gay Pride Event...
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 08:52 PM by farmboy
but she IS NOT the first presidentail candidate or spouse at ANY gay pride event. I have wonderful memories of watching Tipper Gore play drums in April of 2000 at an amazing all afternoon and evening-long Human Rights Campaign concert at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. "Equality Rocks" had tons of performers (Melissa Ethridge, George Michael, Garth Brooks, Rufus Wainwright, Indigo Girls, Ellen DeGeneres, Nathan Lane, K.D. Lang, Pet Shops Boys, Chaka Kahn, and more) and the evening was capped by Tipper appearing on stage and drumming with some of the peformers. She or Elizabeth would make amazing first ladies for this country. I love them both for their stands and their willingness to fight for progressive causes. Can Gore and Edwards be the first co-presidents of the USA? It might take them both to undo the damage by the current anti-Constituion administration.

14. Teresa Heinz Kerry has done a lot with LGBT causes as well
http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=179769&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=653565&highlight=

"Teresa Heinz Kerry, Philanthropist: In a presidential campaign dominated by Republican antipathy and Democratic apathy, Teresa Heinz Kerry stood out as a rare kind of hetero hero. While her husband largely shied away from one of his most loyal voting blocs, rarely mentioning his long record of LGBT support, Heinz Kerry took on the role of unofficial ambassador. At the Democratic National Convention she invited gay delegates to "call me Mama T." The crowd burst into chants of "Mama T," "Mama T." She got a similarly enthusiastic response from gay audiences across the country."
