House votes to ban aid to Saudi Arabia

By Richard Cowan Fri
Jun 22, 6:23 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives
voted on Friday to prohibit any aid to Saudi Arabia as lawmakers
accused the close ally of religious intolerance and bankrolling
terrorist organizations.

The prohibition, reflecting persistent tensions with the kingdom
after the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001,
was attached to a foreign aid funding bill for next year that has
not yet been debated by the Senate.

In the past three years, Congress has passed bills to stop the
relatively small amount of U.S. aid to Saudi Arabia, only to see
the Bush administration circumvent the prohibitions.

Now, lawmakers are trying to close loopholes so that no more
U.S. aid can be sent to the world's leading petroleum exporter.

2. There's a "NO SHITer"
Bold stands, boisterously taken.

Actually it's a real thing. Just seems obvious.

3. One wonders of what the previous aid consisted? Gold whip handles for the Sharia floggings?
An electric whetstone for the beheadings? Food for the imprisoned? One needs only recall that the Wilhelm Tell overture is forbidden in SA as it is seen as a direct threat to the concept of monarchy. . .as is the Marsaillaise. All I can say to the poor poor misunderstood SA sheiks, amirs, mullahs, and assorted semi-divine personages is: Aux arems citoyens! Formez vos bataillons!

4. Given the fact that most suicide bombers in Iraq are Saudis...
... and 911 was carried out by Saudis I would say this is about 6 years too late.

5. The question I have is how much influence do we have over the Saudis
Because once we pull the troops out of Iraq, they could intervene to escalate the civil war on the side of the Sunnis. If foreign aid will convince them not to do this (I doubt it will) then I'd consider that it might have a purpose.
