Pollster: Adding Richardson to the Top Dems
Starting today I'm adding Bill Richardson to the Top Democrats charts for both state primaries and the national nomination polling. The graph above shows his substantial movement in Iowa, and New Hampshire looks quite similar. While Richardson is still in fourth place in both states (5th in NH if you include Gore), his is the only trajectory that is clearly moving up. So it seems fitting to start watching it with each new poll.

Richardson's movement is substantially concentrated in Iowa and New Hampshire, so when I include him elsewhere, you might wonder why I'd call him a "Top Democrat." See Florida below for an example.

-snip

Here Richardson has edged up just a little bit (to 3.9%!), but certainly not like the move he has made in Iowa or New Hampshire. But that is EXACTLY the point. By seeing what he is doing everywhere, we can track how his movement in the earliest states compares to how he is doing in the rest of the primary and caucus states. If I left him out of the "Top Dems" everywhere except where he is doing well, you'd have no comparison across states.

1. Richardson making some noise in Iowa
I believe he has raised a fear in the Hillary camp that she may finish fourth in Iowa. That would be devastating to her I would imagine.

2. Excellent news!
While I've been a bit disappointed in his debate performances so far (which surprises me - he is normally a solid speaker) I believe he has the right combination of good solid ideas, mainstream appeal and experience to get the election won and do a fine job.

3. Wondering Where Those Supporters are Coming From
Kerry used core party members to generate a big swell of support in Iowa. If Richardson is drawing those same core people, he could surprise.

Howard Dean said that the goal of the campaign was to place third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire. And they did -- only on the way down rather than the way up. Maybe Richardson will hit it in the right direction.

5. Bullshit
Wasn't going to make a difference, and wasn't going to be feasible anyway.

10. Defeatist hogwash
That sort of "wouldn't have worked anyway" is VRWC-derived crap. It is the thinking of surrender and is not backed up with facts.

And why is it not backed up by facts? Because Richardson PERSONALLY AND PRECIPITOUSLY ORDERED THE BALLOTING DATA DESTROYED, that's why.

Richardson acted exactly as did Ken Blackwell in Ohio. And now, we should elect this traitorous swine as our nominee???????? Talk about double standards....

11. This still bothers me...
If I could ask him a question in a debate, WHY would be the one!
