Should you take a short break from bitching about Pelosi...
use the time to look up Tip O'Niell's history with both Carter and Reagan. Compare the history of one of the most powerful and experienced Speakers with the current one in office for a whole six months.

O'Neill, with a clear majority and a President in his corner couldn't get universal health care or other good programs off the floor.

Later, he could barely stop some of Reagan's worst excesses, much less get anything he wanted done.

Pelosi has a tougher job than any of her critics can possibly imagine, and I admire her for whatever she can accomplish under these circumstances.

1. The Vietnam war was fought during a Democratic Congress
Important to remember that the presidency makes a big difference.

3. Is anybody else sick to death of people
repeating the phrase "off the table" like it's something new and catchy?

15. How about answering the post rather than repeating the same phrase in different threads
or have you shut your brain down for the night?

This person gave you an intelligent post arguing that from a historical viewpoint even one of our greatest Speakers couldn't get alot done.

What does Nancy's fucking happiness have to do with the post at hand. Why do you think that is our concern. Let her be unhappy. Run against her. Support her opponent. But don't just attack her with mindless, sarcastic bullshit.

16. it's hard work being Nancy.
Impeachment is heavy--WAY heavy. Lifting it off the table is hard work.

If Speakers are powerless, we should just disband Congress and revert to monarchy.

Poor poor leftofthedial. His brain runs on solar energy, you see. When the sun goes down, it's best that he doesn't try to speak.

4. She is definitely growing into her role . . .
And it's unreasonable to expect her to achieve mastery in 6 months or so.

That having been said, she (and Harry Reid in spades) are making a huge strategic mistake in being hypercautious, playing polbiz-as-usual, and employing niggling little Beltway tactics -- when what the most committed Dems want is bold action.

And they *should* be playing to the committed Dems, because the fence sitters among the electorate (who are barely paying attention at this point anyway) are going to be motivated primarily by their assessment of whether Dems are strong or weak, not whether they're right or wrong.

Backbone trumps policy, and will do so big time in 2008.

6. They remind me of brats in the back of the car saying...

Are we there yet?

It took three years and a veto-proof vote to end the Vietnam War. People want this disaster to end like flicking a station on a remote.

7. She somehow pushed herself into becoming "squeaker." She's too weak.
She cannot do the job. She has latched onto Reid who is equally weak. I will speak out about Madame Squeaker every chance I get.

Pelosi hangs with Bush. The voters should send her back to the vineyards.

14. well she's just a WOMAN, you know.
You really shouldn't expect so much of the little lady so soon. I mean, really. What do you want from her?

Maybe she should wave her magic wand?

Click her heels three times?

Maybe flash a little cleavage or something?

I mean, she can't possibly be smart enough to have an important job like that. It's not like baking a cake or picking out curtains for gods sake.

She needs to "grow herself a pair", eh?

any other trite maleisms you can think of?

Like you - any of YOU - could do any frickin' better?

puhleeze.

11. Please don't clump us all together! ... Not everyone is bitching about our Speaker!

Maybe some are louder than others and they're all you can hear right now -- but not everyone is ready to shit-can the Speaker for an Independent!!

- - - - - - - -

Yeah. We want to give up our majority and go back to:

....I think not.

12. I knew him when. Helluvafellah...no matter what anyone says, Tip INVENTED triangulation.
No one did it better.

A nice human being, too, him and his wife Millie as well, may they both RIP. Of course, nowadays, there will be those who will dig him up and excoriate him, probably for the BIG SIN around here lately, which is not being sufficiently "PROGRESSIVE." Of course, "progressive" in that context means "agreeing with the poster no matter how lousy the logic or the argument on an issue" and it completely ignores the "tolerance for differing viewpoints" aspect of true progressives!

I am not in the Bash Nancy Club--it's a childish practice, IMO. But then, I see clearly what she's facing, as do you.
