New Orleans Paper asks what you think of Vitter and the first one is a hoot!
From a Vermonter::
I must say, you know how much we could use a sex scandal like this in Vermont, where I live? All these liberals, socialists even, and there's not an extra-marital affair to be heard of? You'd think at least Howard Dean, with all his odd screaming quirks, could drum up some sort of violation of his marital vows. But, no, sadly. We have to leave all the perversion up to you Red State Folk. How do you do it, with all your bible study and strict laws? How is it that I, a Blue State dweller, am not naked and having illicit sex all day long? You'd think your Red State Code would keep at least your elected officials on the straight and narrow!

6. The brilliance of "Vermonter"--New Orleanians just LOOOVE Bush. That condescending red state shit
has got to go.

Nobody lives in a blue state utopia. Vermont voted 39% for Bush in '04. Every state has red rural areas with Blue and purple cities.

"OOOOH only 4 out of 10 of our citizens are assholes. In your state it's SIX out of 10!"

This is what's behind the lack of caring about what actually happens to New Orleanians--Republicans think they're all black, non-Southern Democrats think of them as "red-staters".

28. I think most of us here can separate New Orleans....
from the rest of Louisiana. In other words, I'd be willing to bet that 7 out of 10 in NOLA proper voted for Kerry, but outside NOLA 7 out of 10 voted for BushCo. I seriously doubt that many on DU look at New Olreanians as red-staters. The rest of the state, absolutely!

13. An even better one from F.R. -- where we see Republican hypocrisy, they see media bias
"What Vitter did was wrong, but it was years ago. The ONLY reason his name is coming out now is PAYBACK for his position against Illegal Immigration. That is how Washington works."

Right. The D.C. Madam releases her customer list, and it includes Vitter, and the only reason the media cover it is that Vitter opposes immigration. If the list included a lawmaker who had voted for the immigration bill, the media would ignore it. Proof that a sitting U.S. Senator had patronized a prostitute just wouldn't be considered newsworthy if not for the media crusade against the poor oppressed conservatives.

The only reason I sometimes bother to wade through the trash at the FReakshow is to find knee-slappers like this one.

"I wonder what Mr. Vitter is doing to protect the sanctity of his marriage after he paid for sex?

We can't have homos getting married - nosiree - but paying for sex with someone who isn't your wife? That's OK in Republican land.

We're laughing our butts off at the Louisiana Republicans who are in full spin mode, distoring the truth and making up lies to somehow make Vitter's pay-for-sex scandal go away. They think since it happened a long time ago, it's OK, while they simultaneously say "Clinton did it too".

(At least Clinton got it for free.)

"Vitter Statement on Protecting the Sanctity of Marriage

"This is a real outrage. The Hollywood left is redefining the most basic institution in human history, and our two U.S. Senators won't do anything about it.

We need a U.S. Senator who will stand up for Louisiana values, not Massachusetts's values. I am the only Senate Candidate to coauthor the Federal Marriage Amendment; the only one fighting for its passage. I am the only candidate proposing changes to the senate rules to stop liberal obstructionists from preventing an up or down vote on issues like this, judges, energy, and on and on." stated David Vitter."

That's it! Repubs have to pay otherwise nobody would take a second look. And they can't stand it. Clinton's charisma was irrestible and the repubs are burned up over it. So they turn their anger into hate, hate, hate.

This is ridiculous. New Orleans bashing on DU. I can't believe it. Sorry to get all up in arms like this, but I am devastated that this has gotten 17 recs--a smarmy, self righteous diatribe by a Vermonter about New Orleans--how ignorant can you get?

23. That map is fascinating...
You can understand why some feel we have to stay at the center to be elected. But I don't see it that way ~ I think it shows that there are plenty of progressives in the "red states." I've been reading Laura Flanders' BLUE GRIT, and she talks about the same thing ~ all the progressive boots on the ground that are overlooked or taken for granted. imo the last thing we should do is water down Democratic principles ~ instead we should reclaim them in a huge way and energize progessives in all 50 Purple States of America.

25. I agree 100% I think that map's gotten a lot bluer all over, the more progressive we've gotten
Now granted, you'll find a lot of the 29% ers down here, but most swing and moderate voters are fed up with the Republicans, and are more progressive than they define themselves. They are ready to follow Democrats, but they just have to trust that the Democrats respect them and value their support.

29. That's why I don't venture out of Portland much....
the vast majority of Oregon's population is located in the Portland Metro area. So in that sense it parellels NOLA. Except for one thing - there were enough blue voters to allow the state to go blue. And as long as we have an electoral college, that's all that matters. So looking at a map doesn't tell the story here.

31. Good point. I'm thinking of moving to Portland.
Ironically, as I defend my state, there are too many conservatives in my immediate surroundings. I was going to move to New Orleans, but I don't think I've got what it takes to make that fight the center of my life for the next 10 years. It's a shame--New Orleans rules. I'm still thinking about it.

32. I fear, as I'm sure you do as well, that NOLA will become...
another Orlando! NOLA was perhaps the most unique city in the U.S. Will it ever be again? One can only hope.

Meantime, Rudy, you might want to get ahead of the curve on that moving to Portland thing. Come on up, My Man!!! We've got a livable downtown, great transit, excellent air quality, easy access to beautiful natural surroundings, a rainy but over-all temperate climate. Plus we're only 2 hours drive from Seattle and 5 hours from Vancouver B.C.

35. I'm afraid Portland will turn into Austin--not that Austin sucks, but too many yuppies took over
It's not like it used to be. Still an awesome city, though.

Most people in New Orleans are worried about it turning into another McCity. I fear that the big money Repukes don't value the Spanish and French architecture as much as they value strip malls and big box retail (which New Orleans has successfully fended off until now).

40. I suppose it could happen, but I wouldn't bet on it....
We've got a "Keep Portland Weird" campaign going on, not to mention that yuppies/conservatives are annoyed by all the "green" work happening around here. There was actually a LTTE in the Oregonian a few weeks ago where some nutjob was complaining about, among other things, the light rail, the bicycle lanes, the street car downtown. These are the people whom, 20 years from now, will still be wondering why the suburban lifestyle is dying.

I imagine New Orleans' campaign would be "Keep New Orleans Mysterious", right?
