Fred Thomson's Wife A Trophy Wife?
So do people of DU think Thomson's wife is a trophy wife? At first I thought she was a trophy wife, but than I began to think and realized I was basing my opinion on one short video in which neither seems to be happy with the other. The video was showed on the Today Show this morning. In the video Thomson's wife is trying to talk to him, but he seems to be completely ignoring her. At that point she seems to get upset at being ignored. So my thought was if he is ignoring his wife she must be a trophy wife. So what do other think?

I realize there are so many more important issues taking place. However, I think everyone can take a little time out of the extremely serious stuff and talk about other issues.

2. "He's the kind of man little girls dream about marrying"
Lorrie Morgan, a country singer who dated him in the mid-1990s, told the Times: “I couldn’t think of a bad word to say about Fred if somebody put a gun to my head . . . He’s the kind of man little girls dream about marrying, who opens doors for you, lights your cigarettes, helps you on with your coat, buys wonderful gifts. It’s every woman’s fantasy.

“I think he has a great chance of capturing the women’s vote,” she said. “He’s majestic. He’s a soft, safe place to be and that could be Fred’s ticket.”

13. My Thoughts Exactly
I was pretty shocked by what Morgan said. I was thinking Morgan has watched too much of the 40s and 50s movies.

21. Republicans disagree with you noble view
They attacked Theresa Heinz Kerry with reckless abandon.
Thompson's wife is fair game after that disgusting Republican display.
Democrats did not attack Laura Bush in 2004, but the Republicans relentlessly smeared Theresa Kerry.
Boycott Heinz! She's some kind of "foreigner"!

What goes around, comes around.
It's Mrs. Thompson's turn.

8. I don't care about the "trophy wife" part,
(I have a trophy husband ;) ) I think it's interesting that he treated her with such disrespect on national tv though. That tells us that he is too important to listen to others he finds "less than" himself. The USA is just one big "trophy wife" for many people in politics anyway. It's all about the power I guess.

10. Huh? A trophy wife with a boob job?
Why would you think Fred Thompson's got himself a trophy wife with a boob job? Have people been repeating this, saying "Fred Thompson dumped his first wife, tomcatted around and bought himself a trophy wife with a boob job?"

How very coarse of them.

14. huh? Is Kucinich's wife a trophy wife?
That's where this kind of thread leads you. There are 101 things to dislike Thompson for, but suggesting that there is an "issue" in his personal life is pretty dumb. He was married, got divorced and was single for 17 years before marrying his current wife, whom he met while working in DC (she's a lawyer). He was 59 when they married, and she was 35. They've been married five years and have a kid. What in that profile makes her a "trophy wife."

If you go down that route, expect similar allegations to be tossed at Democrats. Is Elizabeth Kucinich a "trophy wife"? I don't think so, but on the record, Kucinich is twice divorced and was around 59 when they married, and she was around 28. Bigger age differential than Thompson and his wife.

19. well, since its clear she's not a trophy wife, should I assume Thompson is peachy?
That's the problem with your kind of "logic." You say "look at what kind of guy he is" based on his marital history. BUt his marital history -- married for a bunch of years, amicable divorce, seventeen years as a single divorced man with no apparent scandals, and then a marriage to an educated, politically astute "player" 24 years his junior. Well, what are those "actions" supposed to tell me about Thompson?

What then does the fact that Ted Kennedy's wife is 22 years younger than he is or that John Conyers wife is, I believe, nearly 30 years younger, supposed to tell me about them?

There are actions that matter, and actions that don't.

36. True, but the visuals are far, far different
And they matter much more than the actual numbers. Thompson looks far older than his actual age, and his wife younger than her actual age. Kucinich and his wife appear visually to be not all that far apart in age, 10 or at the very most 15 years. That's the flip side of being mistaken for the newsboy when you're 30--you look like a vigorous young adult when you're 60.

I guess Romney is sort of "clean" in that regard. Well, except for that whole torturing the family pet thing. I suppose I'm not the first to think he's lost the vote of every pet-lover in America with that move. That's got to be a big voting block!!

18. I find the "trophy" concept demeaning to both men and women
My own preference has always been for women about my age or slightly older. Hugh Hefner likes them about age 22. Some women like younger men, some like them older. Every relationship is unique.

20. trophy?
What is the definition of a trophy wife? My wife is 12 years my junior, and far more attractive than I am (at least I think so). Do I have a trophy wife?

There are so many more issues that need discussing, without having to start insulting peoples' wives. Are the kids next? Why can't we just leave this kind of junk alone?

25. Who cares? I am more interested by what Thompson could propose than by his wife.
Definitively a very sexist view that I would not expect on a progressive blog, though I should know better.

The only comment I have is that if Thompson was a Democrat, we would not have a commentator on the Today Show saying that nobody votes against a candidate because of his wife.

I hate to even go there, but worst case scenario, if he is the republican nominee, he would probably be useless, he doesn't seem like he'd be a proactive, blow up the world type like the ones we got.

35. Not by the traditional definition
She's a self-supporting lawyer AFAIK, and Thompson didn't leave a wife his own age to marry her.

The visuals, however, are a completely different story. They literally scream "Used up old fart married to big tits."

37. I read recently on Freepville...
that Thompson made a video (of course) for some sort of right-to-life gathering (I guess this was before they knew he used to lobby for the abortion-rights crowd)--anyhoo, some poster who was there said the video was quite lame, and that Fred introduced his wife and baby really quick-like, and then pretty much shoved them off-camera, and the audience actually laughed, if I recall the account correctly. Sounds similar to what you're saying.
