Pelosi "recuses" herself.... could impeachment then proceed???
The most convincing explanation I have heard as to why Nancy Pelosi took impeachment "off the table" is that it puts her in position to become president. Very much like a judge presiding over a relative's criminal trial.

Your thoughts, please: could she somehow stand aside from the entire procedure? Could she (or someone) set it up to where she isn't "eligible" to accede to the throne if Bush and Cheney are removed?

If so, would that clear the way and end her one-woman obstruction of the impeachment remedy?

Just thinking out loud. What do you think?

1. I've also thought this put her in an awkward position for the reasons you've stated
But she shouldn't have discouraged or prevented others in the Democratic leadership from advocating impeachment. My impression is that Conyers was in danger of losing his Judiciary Committee chair if he didn't pull his punches on the impeachment question. After all, he had been hinting at the "I" word earlier than most. And at long last, he seems to be slowly returning to his original position.

2. So
I guess she did some research into that. That tells me she's not power hungry at all. If she was, she would have left it on the table. I can understand her reasoning, but I really wish she reconsider. She'd have the power to end this war and put us back on the right path to gain the world's respect.

4. Methinks she'd rather have someone like Conyers call for impeachment
because if she does it, it could come across as a power-grab.
Yeah,that's entirely possible.

5. I don't think that has anything to do with it. If Cheney is impeached and removed, Bush nominates a
new vp and Congress has power to consent. He is not going to nominate Nancy Pelosi. If Bush is impeached and removed, Chaney becomes president and nominates a new vp. He is not going to nominate Nancy Pelosi. I believe it is only is they are removed or incapacitated at the same time that Pelosi would become prez.

6. Pelosi has always said "let's see where the investigations take us."
The off the table remark was clarification that it wasn't her "goal" when stepping into the speaker role. That does not mean it wont happen.

7. the possibility
of removing both Bush and Cheney via impeachment is so minuscule, that Pelosi becoming President isn't a concern.

8. If by chance, prez & vprez were removed, this is the line of
succession.

The current presidential line of succession, as specified by the Presidential Succession Act of 1947 (3 U.S.C. § 19).

Office Current Officer
1 Vice President of the United States and President of the Senate - Dick Cheney
2 Speaker of the House of Representatives - Nancy Pelosi
3 President of the Senate pro tempore - Robert Byrd
4 Secretary of State - Condoleezza Rice
5 Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson

If anything happens, Pelosi needs to be available for the position.

Robert Byrd is 80.

Someone else needs to do it.......

9. Impeaching Cheney will not make Pelosi President or Vice-President
Impeaching Cheney will save American lives in that just starting the impeachment process will throw a big monkey wrench on Cheney's plans to start a war with Iran.

If you want to stop a US attack on Iran, impeach Cheney!

10. it would take an amendment to the constitution to change presidential succession
seems to me that would take some time to get 3/4 of the states to ratify!

11. Pelosi said that last October. BEFORE the election. Has she said it again since?
There are multiple investigations ongoing into misdeeds of the administration.

13. You are assuming that Peolsi's opposition is the only thing blocking impeachment
Are you forgetting the 44 Blue Dog Democrats?
