Mika Brzezinski - the latest honest media person to join MSNBC?
Formerly a correspondent with CBS NEWS, then a gig at NBC, then back to CBS, and now the morning news person on the new 'Morning Joe' Imus replacement on MSNBC, the daughter of Carter national security advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Mika has been making a serious name for herself of late.

She caught our attention when she refused to read a Paris Hilton story when there was serious news to be covered. Not only did she initially refuse to read the story, she refused twice more as her producer kept putting it into her script.

In the screen shot below, she had just finished a story about increased SUV sales and set off a fire storm by quipping "What's wrong with people"?

Just this morning, as I was watching her do a stint as hourly news anchor, in talking to some security expert, she asked how much of the whole new focus on terrorism risk is hype and how much is real.

Brzezinski has shown herself to be a real breath of fresh air and no shrinking violet for what she thinks. I suppose interjecting one's personal views in the news is unprofessional. Or is that last decade's thinking? I find her a nice counterpoint to the right wing nutters who seem to hold most of these on air jobs.

1. MSNBC Has Turned A Corner
tweaking the station toward the left was a long overdue. Someone had to do it, too bad it didn't happen in 02 when we really needed more voices against the occupation besides the fired MSNBC Phil Donahue.

Kudos to Dan Abraham for convincing the bosses to go after lying cabal. Now if they'd just get rid of Tucker Carlson.

4. The Carlson boy is the very worst on MSNBC
But I'm not so sure they've turned a corner. I actually **used** to think that, but of late, I have doubts. They seem to have *really* turned up the Carlson boy's volume. And while their personnel seems to be more toward the center or even slightly left, their editorial line seems as rightward as always. Not like Faux, but probably the equal of CNN. I had hoped for an editorial shift to match the obviousness of the personnel shift.

18. Carlson isn't as bad as the idiots on Faux
He's a total right-winger but he at least realized that he should jump ship before SS Bush Administration was entirely under water.

I'm enjoying Morning Joe, and as Joe keeps reminding us, "this ain't Scarborough Country". He really wants to see more *new* Dems like Jim Webb :)

7. Just looked up her Wikipedia, learned something I've never heard! Her dad is Zbigniew Brzezinski.
I have been living for years with the belief she is related to Walter Cronkite!

Here is her excellent Wikipedia profile:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mika_Brzezinski

and her father's:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zbigniew_Brzezinski

This journalist may be helping to move her group back to the position of respect it occupied before the right-wing syndicate swarmed it, like a plague of locusts.

10. Sorry, there. I'm an sloppy, haphazard reader. Didn't mean to rehash
material already given.

Have you ever heard of any possible relationship to Walter Cronkite, by the way, as a grandfather, great-uncle, etc.? I've lived with this belief for YEARS. It's a hard habit to relinquish.

Thank you for this thread. I've liked her so much from the days she did CBS's overnight news show. She is a breath of completely original air: alert, well-balanced, intelligent in a realm of completely ridiculous adult-sized men and women.

12. I've never heard anything abut the Cronkite connection.
Maybe on her mother's side? Through marriage (hers or her three older brothers)?

14. The reason it happens is some of us have to read in hurried tiny moments,
and don't really have the time we'd like to sit and read at our leisure, usually.

I don't think it reflects stupidity, or carelessness on the parts of DU'ers who are rushed for time.

19. interjecting one's personal views in the news is unprofessional
I like her. But this leads us to a dark place. The news should be the news. For a morning news/entertainment show, I think she'd be excellent, though. It would be clear that opinions would be aired. I am fine with that. Hell, Imus' morning show was entertainment, too. And Mika is very entertaining.
