Poll question: Presidential Poll: Your Second Choice

At the very least even if one wishes to stick with a candidate to the end of the convention; who would be your second choice to see face the Republicans in November 2008?

I think this is a very relevant question because since no candidate at this time holds the support of the majority of Democrats or the majority of DUers, it is worth thinking about.

1. I'd have to say Edwards is my second choice.

4. you would be just as happy to see Mike Gavel as Joe Biden?
I agree that Sen. Clinton is the clear front runner at this time.

But what if that changes by the end of Super Tuesday?

15. I can't imagine a set of circumstances that would allow either one to get the nom.
If Hillary does not get it, Obama or Edwards will. I suppose Richardson could. Clark or Gore could enter the race and capture the nom. Yeah, I can support any of those guys.

5. Completely
I'm glad someone finally said it. All this in fighting could be the death of us all.

6. I agree that most of the sniping seems to be rather empty nonsense

the differences at least between the top-tier candidates are marginal and more rhetorical than anything else

8. Dennis Kucinich is my absolute first choice, as he was in 2004, so for my second choice...
it is a close call between Edwards and Obama, so I chose Edwards.

10. Edwards #1. Clinton #2.
I love Edwards being of a populist mindset myself. But the realist in me would support Clinton or whoever else may win the nomination other than Edwards.

11. Gore's my first choice, Richardson my second. If Gore does not run then Obama third.
Experience before charisma.

I want a viable candidate who played no role in getting us into this mess in Iraq but I also want an experienced executive who I feel confident could do the job.

Not that Barack Obama couldn't, there's just nothing in his record showing that he could handle the task of running a huge bureaucracy.

13. I like your reasoning
That's why my first choice would be Al Gore. Second choice Wes Clark.

I would be happy to see either Obama or Richardson in the VP slot.

Both are young enough that they could run for President in 2016.

It looks pretty certain that Wes Clark will announce at the start of September.

19. Ah Clark, I forgot Clark.
He is another who is on the list of candidates I could happily support if he runs.

12. Such a dumb poll
This poll makes no sense to me.

Recently I ran a poll here on DU asking people to name their Top 3 out of 10 possible candidates. So it wasn't a straight-choice poll. In fact there were about 820 possible combinations (if you take into account that nobody was forced to list 3 names - some only gave 1 or 2).

Around half of the people who took part included Al Gore or Wes Clark as their number 1 pick.

I think Obama did best out of the declared candidates.

My conclusion would be that the field is wide open.

14. thank you

for your input

Since polls seem to be all over the place here on DU for first choice, I wanted to see if there was any difference when it came to second choice.

That does not seem to be the case

In the wider world outside of DU, there is no doubt that Hilary is the front runner. However, that does seem changeable. I conclude that the race is ultimately wide open with some advantage for Hilary.

I cannot find so far any evidence that either Al Gore or Wesley Clark are likely to enter the race. Do you have any evidence that they are seriously contemplating it?

16. Al Gore is keeping his options open
Here is what he told Larry King on CNN (on May 22nd, 2007):

GORE: Look, I don't know why it's ordained that as soon as one presidential campaign is over with, the next one begins right away. I'm one of those who doesn't like to see the Christmas goods put into stores right after Halloween.

And I think the American people are not well-served by having an endless campaign. We are 500 days away from the next election. So why just sort of close up the field and say, OK, this is it. Place your bets. I don't have to play that game.

KING: No, you don't. But why not take the Sherman approach? Why not say, I don't want to run, and if nominated, I won't serve?

GORE: Well, I see no reason to do that. Why would I do that?

KING: Because when you don't, you leave things open.

GORE: Well, look, I'm 59 years old, 59 is the new 58.

KING: And you're 40.

GORE: Well, I have not closed the door at some point in the future to consider being a candidate.

PS - I have no idea what Larry King meant with "And you're 40." Maybe I should check my TiVO.

17. Wes Clark "thinks about it every day"
At least that is what he told the New York Times (see NYT magazine, July 1st).

There's the fact that he has recently switched from FOX News to MSNBC.

His regular appearances on Countdown are a great way to reach primary voters.

Plus he is about to bring out a book on September 4th.

The title of the book is "A TIME TO LEAD For Duty, Honor and Country"

The title and the timing of the book seem to point in a certain direction.

You can find plenty more subtle hints on Wes Clark's website:

18. 2nd through 10th choices are not on the poll.

I could list them, but it doesn't really matter. I could probably list at least 25 Democrats that would be higher on my list of choices than the rest of that field.
