Can Gore do more good as President of the United States, or where he is now?

He's doing a tremendous job as a mere civilian, already. But this argument that he can do more good that way than as the President- are you kidding me?

Is this not the penultimate disingenuous argument, or what?

The President wouldn't have as much power as a private citizen, even a private citizen in Al Gore's position. :eyes: Come on.

Besides, there is a lot more trouble in this country, and on this planet, than just global warming. As President, Gore could increase the breadth of his influence on ALL policy a hundred fold.

2. He is no good if the Democratic leadership in Congress is too corrupt.
Too many Democrats who would rather serve Wall Street than the people and pretend to be ordinary "middle of the road" Democrats to appear as a friend of the working man.

4. The Democratic leadership in Congress is having trouble because

there are two lines of defense they have to get through- the minority party, and then ChimpCo.

If Gore was in the White House, it would just be a matter of bulldozing the Congressional minority to get things done. Considering that the Republicans are probably going to lose even more seats in '08, the Dems would likely be in the same situation that the Republicans were in from 2002 to 2006- a very good one. I can't imagine them complaining at that point.

5. of course he can do MUCH MORE as President
since he would actually have the POWER to try to get through the things he wants. almost half of that might be to just stop the shit the Republicans are doing.

i don't see why some don't get this especially those who claim to support Gore and his cause.

6. It's one of those Orwellian "up is down" arguments.
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 10:05 PM by BullGooseLoony
It makes no sense at all.

Yeah, Gore would have to get caught up in "the politics of politics" again, but that doesn't mean he would have less power. And it's not like he would get into the White House, with a Democratically-controlled Congress, and then suddenly forget about the problems of and his positions on global warming and the rest of it.

7. and the environment is not an isolated issue either
it covers many areas from just working out international agreements to limit pollution and doing things like investing and getting other nations to invest in new greener technology. and of course that is connected to issues like jobs and providing tax credits.

so no matter what issue he is working on he would be able to try to influence things so it's better for the environment.

8. Nor is Gore a one-issue person, as one can see in
"The Assault on Reason." His interests reach much further than the environment, even as the environment is affecting a broader spectrum of issues.
