Today's evisceration of Gonzales was an amazing event. Those Senators weren't just frustrated and disgusted... they were REALLY, REALLY ANGRY. Even the Republicans, save for the insane Hatch, were frothing. (Well, Hatch was frothing too - but it was just rabies.)
I was fortunate enough to watch the downfall of Nixon as a youngster. I remember how Congress's concern turned to anger - and then impeachment. The anger began once the Saturday Night Massacre took place. For Congress, a President breaking the law is something to be concerned about - but a President mooning Congress - that's when the velvet gloves are replaced by brass knuckles.
It took almost a year between The Saturday Night Massacre and Nixon's resignation. I think that Bush will be gone faster, for two reasons.
First off, no investigation is needed to uncover many of Bush's crimes - they are out in the open. The man has taken the novel approach of simply declaring that his crimes are legal, and having Gonzales write a memo confirming that. If Bush thinks that the Constitution is just a "damned piece of paper", just wait until he sees what Congress thinks of those phony-baloney memos.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, an election is coming up in less than 16 months. The Republicans are hemorrhaging - their poll numbers and fundraising are dismal. If they don't move quickly to remove from their neck that stinking albatross carcass that is George W. Bush, next year's election will be the political equivalent of Cheney's "hunting" of birds tethered to the ground. If they want to survive as a relevant party, Bush has got to go - and fast.
So, ladies and gentlemen, soak this all in - it's history in the making. You'll be retelling this tale to future generations, and you don't want to miss a thing.
