CITY COUNCIL: Gallagher leaves GOP whipless
Whip... whip... must... find... WHIP!With last week's rape indictment against Queens council member Dennis Gallagher, the three-man Republican caucus in the 51-member City Council lost its minority whip - and faces more woe when the Standards and Ethics Committee meets today.
Gallagher was arraigned on charges including first-degree rape for allegedly luring a 52-year-old woman he met in a bar to his district office, where she said he sexually assaulted her. He claims the encounter was consensual.
Late Friday, Gallagher stepped down as minority whip, quit the council's negotiating team and asked out committee assignments for now. The ethics panel ultimately may fine, censure or expel him.
James Oddo and Vincent Ignizio, the council's other Republicans, are from Staten Island.
