Head of Young Republicans under investigation for blowing a sleeping guy
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 09:12 PM by CurtEastPoint
Former Clark County GOP Chair and newly elected Young Republican National Federation Chair Glenn Murphy is under investigation for criminal deviate conduct, a Class B felony, for allegedly engaging in oral sex with a sleeping victim. This is not his first run-in with the law for this kind of offense.

61. Why do you guess the complaintant is gay?

Just because Mr. Murphy says so, was maybe fantasizing and "hoping" so, doesn't make it so. Also, even if the complaintant is gay, does that matter? Unwanted sexual advances, sexual assault, is illegal and wrong. What a person's sexual preference is, is irrelevant if it was not consensual!

Thanks (I think). I hadn't seen that one before. And maybe I'm the last person to know, but I was surprised to learn that Ted Bundy was a Republican operative:
A New Ted Bundy: Bundy worked on the re-election campaign of Washington's Republican Governor Dan Evans. Evans was elected and he appointed Bundy to the Seattle Crime Prevention Advisory Committee. Bundy's political future seemed secure, when in 1973 he became assistant to Ross Davis, chairman of the Washington State Republican Party. - About.com

60. that reminds me
I roomed with the president of my university's CRs for a semester. Real nice guy, I remember it being kind of fun. I haven't thought of him in years.

One thing that cracked me up is how he liked to pantomime smoking a joint to show disapproval of something me or my friends said or did.

The guy was real affable, just the image of a big doughy heartland conservative. And I sincerely would not be a bit surprised if he turned out gay, just a feeling I got.

Yeah the guy I lived with my sophomore year was also the president. Don't have to worry about him latching on to anything while I'm sleeping though he was the biggest womanizer I've ever seen. I walked in on that guy more times than I'd like to remember. Nice kid though. Just a tiny bit misguided about a whole lot of things.

74. They even lie on their way out
Rather than take the hit and resign some kind of grace, they lie lie lie about why he's resigning:

UPDATE: Murphy recently sent an e-mail telling friends in Florida about his decision to resign from the YRNF position for business reasons. Read his letter after the jump.

To my dearest friends in Florida,

It's been an absolutely crazy weekend for me, and I just wanted to take a few minutes and share with you some of the decisions I’ve had to make in a very short amount of time. Some you may have heard, some not.

I wanted to address the Floridians specifically because of the close friendships I have developed with so many of you.

First the great news. I bid on a contract for my company a little more than a year ago. I didn't think it was going to go anywhere. It was a huge project, and taking on the commitment would be life altering for me and my business — my company doing in one year what I would ordinarily do in five. I never thought in a million years that I would land this bid. Well, I landed the bid Friday. Yay for me, right?

There was a major catch.

Due to the nature of the client, one of the stipulations in the contract was that I hold no official partisan titles. (insert gut-wrenching dilemma here) I could help. I could maintain the political consulting division of my business as long as I had additional lead consultants. But I could hold no official Republican positions.

My family sat down with me Saturday evening to look at things from every angle. We're very close. My mom was pretty blunt about what I needed to do. If I didn't take the job, there could potentially never be that type of opportunity again and I would be shorting the security of my future and the future of my family. I took mom's advice to heart.

Every one knows how hard I've worked for the party and the Young Republicans. We've achieved some amazing things together. So you understand how torturous and monumental this decision is — especially coming after an election I spent the last 6 months of my life working toward.

I spent the majority of my weekend shaking with anxious indecision. I didn't want to disappoint people. I didn't want people to be angry. But I prayed with my family, and we determined that I have to take this opportunity for my long-term security.

So what does that mean?

I have resigned from all of my Republican partisan positions and I signed my new client contracts this yesterday. Jessica Colón will take my place as YRNF Chair. We're working VERY hard to make sure the transition is seamless.

The elections of 2007 and 2008 are absolutely critical and the YRNF needs to be operating at full capacity – no limits, no constraints. I have the utmost confidence in Jessica Colón and the team we have all built to lead the Young Republicans into a new era of accomplishment. I believe in the strength and resolve of the organization and its members and have full confidence that my resignation will in no way hinder the new administration’s capability to make a positive impact on the upcoming elections. Together, we adopted our Recruit, Educate and Deploy strategy. Please support Jessica and the team. The whole 21-person elected team is still in place, save one.

With strong and talented people in place ready to take over the fight, my decision became at least a little easier. It would be (as my mom said) stupid to bypass this business opportunity.

My parents also gave me one other piece of advice. It was a piece of advice that I didn't need because it was already in my heart to do. Once we made the decision, they told me, "Make sure you talk to all of those nice people in Florida. We know how much they did for you and we know how much you care for them."

So, I hope you can understand how heart-wrenching this has been for me. And I hope you know how much I appreciate everything all of you have done me and for the Young Republicans.

This whole thing has been as unexpected to me as much as it has you. I hope you can support me on one of the "biggest decisions of my life."

Your Friend,
Glenn Murphy

Your Friend,
Glenn Murphy

Then this from his attorney:

On behalf of Mr. Murphy I would point out several things:

1. Mr. Murphy has not been arrested nor has he been charged with a crime.

2. Mr. Murphy contends that the events that took place that evening were as between two consenting adults.

3. Mr. Hammond and his sister taped, without Mr. Murphy's knowledge, their exchange. Mr. Hammond did not inform the police of the existence of the tape. We informed the police of the existence of the tape in order to make sure that the police had all of the evidence.

4. At no time was Mr. Hammond ever asked to forgo making a police report. In fact, Mr. Hammond was informed that if he felt a crime occurred he should make a report.

5. The 1998 report was a public record. The allegations in 1998 were investigated and no action was taken. Upon the determination that the 1998 incident was closed the report became a public record.

6. It is very disappointing that the police report was leaked to the press. This is an ongoing criminal investigation. The report is not a public record. The act of leaking the report compromises the ability of the police to conduct their investigation. The act of leaking the report was clearly an effort to deny Mr. Murphy the opportunity to have a fair, unbiased chance to defend these allegations.

7. I am not a Republican. I am an attorney who represents clients. In fact, my wife has served as a Democrat elected official for sixteen (16) years having just been re-elected. This is not a partisan issue. This is an issue of fairness and due process. Neither of these know party affiliation, race, creed or religion. We all, both Democrats and Republicans, should embrace them and hope that, if ever in these same shoes, no one decides to trample these to impugn us before the process has been allowed to proceed.

I will not respond to any posts. I will not review this blog again. I only provide this information at the request of my client.

Thank You.

Larry O. Wilder

83. No ...

I think the more general hit focuses on the the rape part as opposed to the homosexuality. The reason Republicans get doubled up (no pun intended) on homosexuality is that they are SOOO AGAINST it in any form. So when a big Republican is outed it is usually some guy who was publicly against homosexuality and privately contracting services from the likes of Jeff Gannon. It's the hypocrisy.

When a gay man stands behind the rhetoric homophobes and says nothing, that makes him a hypocrite. I doubt that the young Republicans would have elected a homosexual to be their leader.

105. That's one way of looking at it
I don't really think that traditional Goldwater moderates or even the Log Cabin Republicans should be held accountable for the bigotry of conservative evangelical Christian Republicans.

I doubt that the young Republicans would have elected a homosexual to be their leader.

With today's general climate in the Republican party, you are probably right. There was a time, not too long ago, when a sizeable portion of Republicans if not a majority would have regarded a person's sexual orientation as nobody else's business.

That's one of the reasons my mom quit the GOP at about age 65 after being an active life-long member.
