Bush Leads Dean by 20 points
Bush 55%
Dean 35%

Why would a Dean supporter post this? A couple of reasons: First, a respect for an honest look at the campaigns. Second, because I expect we'll be even more impressed with Dean as a candidate when we see where he goes from here.

18. yes and there is no reason to hurry our choice.
we have plenty of time to see which candidate will be best against bush on election day. there are many isues to consider, such as

only 20% of registered voters want a candidate that opposes the war.

we are soooo screwed.

20. Indy and Rep Vote for Dean has been GOING DOWN with More Info.

% Independent and Republican voters likely to vote for Dean has been GOING DOWN with increasing PRESS COVERAGE.

The level of PRESS Given to Dean is already way more what has been
given in the past to a candidate AFTER New Hampshire. I have been through 5 campaigns, and I tell you the coverage of Dean is unbelievably high. Dean appears in almost Every Network Newscast Every Day.

Reality is that your average middle-America voter rarely takes in much info about guy from the party out of office even on election day. Their vote is really based on vague impressions, prejudice or tradition.

Whether we like it or not Deans Free Press Honeymoon will soon be over guys. Too many negatives have shown-up in his campaign and his record. Even my Dean supporter friend are on pins-and-needles worried about what my come out next.

Anyway, the Republican onslaught will gather momentum as soon as it certain Dean has sealed the nomination. THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS!

2. I'm no Dean fan, but
20 points behind, after all the negative press on Dean lately, isn't so bad. I would have expected a 30-point gap.

4. I think that might be the Saddam glow for Bush, it will go away.
I have also noticed that whenever anyone starts making challenges to Bush, we go on Orange.

I think if the truth can get out through the attention to Dean, there is good chance of winning. Most people do not like to be lied to by their president.

Most just do not know it yet.

5. My sense is that
Dean has some real stubborn staying power and that George Bush is easily distracted... unless he's tied in his chair by Cheney and crew. I sense that Dean is a disciplined guy (in spite of some of his slips) and that Bush has no disipline at all unless it's imposed upon him by his team (and they have to sleep sometime!).

6. Doesn't bother me a whit
Now, if one of other candidates were beating Bush* in this kind of poll then maybe I'd think twice.

Looks like its within striking distance to me!

13. But they didn't ask...
Now, if one of other candidates were beating Bush*

They didn't ask about other candidates, so there's no way to know. But it's true that a 20% deficit isn't all that bad at this stage. I'm still not sanguine about these numbers, since the ABC/WaPo poll immediately below the CBS one shows "any Democrat" at 41% and Bush with higher support against Dean than against "any Democrat."

Still, we have almost a year to go, and again, these numbers aren't bad. Looking forward to seeing new numbers soon - the *latest* numbers on the Polling Report page come from Dec. 22 - but then, I don't think non political junkies are going to be paying much attention till after the holidays anyway, so I think polls taken after the first week in January will be more useful.

And (gotta pitch my guy, too...), note that the earlier Newsweek poll shows Clark does slightly better against Bush than Dean does. I'm jes' sayin'...

10. Yes, you make an excellent point
Considering so many voters aren't even paying attention yet I'd say these numbers are not bad at all! :toast:

This is the closest thing.

9. This is amazing
When you think where Dean has come from. A real testament to his campaign and most of all to the tireless volunteers. I saw some great photos of these 2 guys in OK standing by their car on a busy street holding up signs that said "Free Dean Stuff" all day. They gave away a ton of literature, stickers, etc. They did not get paid. There are a million stories like this, and they all give me hope.

This is in fact the LEAST pessimistic campaign I've ever been part of.

12. General election polls are meaningless at this point
At this stage in 2000, Bush led Gore by 15-20 points. In 1992, Perot led both Bush and Clinton. In 1988, Dukakis led Bush by 15 points. In 1976, Carter wasn't even a blip on Ford's radar screen.

14. Deep in the brains of...
...many voters is the idea that Bush cheated to win against Gore. They'll step into the voting booth, draw the curtain, and vote Democratic, no matter who's nominated.

George W. Bush hasn't made a strong case that he's a good leader. He's blustered his way through the terrorism issue, but the news this weekend from Iraq was as bad as ever. Or worse, since Saddam is locked up.

Gore played nice in the debates. I don't think any of our nine candidates will be as nice this time. I think they'll have to carry Bush off-stage on a stretcher with an IV.

The Democrats will win in 2004.

19. Meaningless
He leads every other candidate by that much or more in most polls.

It's all meaningless at this stage in the game.

Concentrate on the primary.
