best way to fight the repub electoral vote power grab in California?
many of us have heard repubs want a ballot initiative in california to divide the state's electoral votes between dems and repubs, instead of dems getting all the votes in a block.

this process should come to a screeching halt as soon as a proposed initiative is submitted to the secretary of state's office for the following reason. As posted at dailykos, according the US Constitution:
___________________________________________
Article II section 1

Each state shall appoint, in such manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a number of electors, equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or person holding an office of trust or profit under the United States, shall be appointed an elector.
____________________________________________

This seems to say the legislature is responsible for dividing up any electoral votes. Therefore, any attempt to alter the distribution of electoral votes is unconstitutional unless it is directed by the legislature. Ballot initiatives are invalid.

If you are in California, or not, you may wish to bring this to the attention of your democratic party legislators and to the office of the secretary of state. The best way to stop this nonsense is to keep it off the ballot in the first place.

In California, proposed initiatives must be screened by the SOS first before signature gathering can begin. In fact, the whole signature gathering process is a sham as people get paid per signature to gather names in support of initiatives. Most signature gatherers do not care a whit about the content of any initiatives. Maybe signature gatherers would sell their own children into slavery if they could get enough money per signature.

If you have every observed this process, you will see that initiatives that pay the most per signature are the ones these people push, and ones that pay the least are at the bottom of the pile offered to prospective signers. And make no mistake about it the republican party through its shadow groups will pay top dollar for each signature.

In fact, signature collecting is run by just several big special interest outfits who control, hire, and pay gatherers.

The old days of people getting signatures for causes they believe in are long gone.
