Mechanical problem delays straw poll count

Some sort of a problem with the voting system has delayed the 7 p.m. announcement of the vote totals from the Iowa Straw Poll.

“I’ve heard machine difficulties. I haven’t heard specifically what the difficulty is,” said Mary Tiffany, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Republican Party.

Under a blanket of relentless August heat, thousands of Iowa Republicans, most of the party's candidates for president, and a horde of reporters and photographers from around the globe converged on Ames today for an early exercise in the process of picking a Republican presidential candidate.

Whether the Iowa Republican Party's presidential straw poll is over-hyped and overrated was not foremost on the minds of the party members who trekked to Hilton Coliseum to take in this spectacle in American politics.

1. The real problem is
that Diebold has just gotten some "donations" from one of the candidates that is larger than the "donation" by another, and they have to figure out the proportion of the vote based on the cash.

2. Update from the Des Moines Register: Problem with one voting machine, need to recount 1,500 ballots!
Voting machine difficulties delayed the announcement of the vote totals tonight at the Iowa Straw Poll.

About 1,500 ballots needed to be recounted, said Mary Tiffany, a spokeswoman for Republican Party of Iowa.

One machine caused the problem, said Chuck Laudner, the party’s executive director.

At one point, its black box contained 500 paper ballots but the machine’s memory said it had scanned in 498.

All the ballots fed into that machine throughout the day were hand counted, and now are being re-fed into the machine to recalculate the vote.

“As soon as they get down to the bottom of that stack the results are finished and they’ll be up on the board,” Laudner said at 7:45 p.m.

The machine was at a voting station in the Scheman Building, and the problem was noted by campaign poll-watchers before the poll closed.

4. Oh, no recount, JUST get over it
Oh, so now they want a recount, oh, it's all right to have a recount when we don't like the results.

Cry me a river, they busted up our recount in 2000 with DeLay goons
and busted up our recount by putting in the fix in 2004.

3. How does it feel to be the one cheated by the machines
Tell me how does it feel, as long as you keep winning and winning even when you knew that should not, could not win,
and you tipped the dealer, even though you knew the game was crooked. Well, well, well, how does it feel.

5. More from Marc Ambinder on the Diebold machines...
Edited on Sat Aug-11-07 08:25 PM by flpoljunkie
AMES -- Mary Tiffany, an Iowa Republican Party official, confirms that at least one voting machine malfunctioned and that 1500 ballots "and change" were fed through it again. The party rented optical scan machines from Diebold, a company at the center of several recent voting controversies. Recently, the state of California decertified Diebold machines for the 2008 election.

Yesterday, eight Iowans who support Ron Paul failed to get a judge to require a voter-verified paper ballot be used in today's straw poll. Separately, the state party told the Paul campaign that a full paper recount would cost $184,000.

(Aren't opti-scan paper ballots "voter verified?" I think Ron Paul wanted hand counted paper ballots, actually.)

7. folks, if we had real leadership in the democrat party, instead of
spine-less cave-ins in Utah, they would be jumping on this issue with both feet.

But instead, watch our leadership be absolutely quiet on voting rights, voting access, vote theft and machine problems. when did our leadership become so incompetent? and why? could it be be deisgn?
