Lay Down Your Arms ...
Edited on Sun Aug-19-07 04:22 AM by NanceGreggs
… your weapons are useless here.

You can listen to our conversations, but you cannot make us silent.

You can don the armor of lies, but you are defenseless against the truth.

You can spread fear, but you cannot match our courage.

You can do your best to divide us, but you cannot destroy our inherent unity.

You can threaten our possessions, but you cannot possess our sense of determination.

You can declare war, but you cannot change our desire for peace.

You can break our laws, but you cannot break our spirit.

You can temporarily change our course of action, but you cannot alter our ultimate destiny.

You can shout your shallow propaganda, but you cannot be heard above the din of words that have true depth and meaning.

You can brag about your wealth, but you cannot use it to purchase a safe haven for the soul you have so readily sold.

You can deny justice to the wrongly-accused, but you cannot escape the justice that is your due.

You can ignore the poorer among us, but you cannot dissuade the masses from championing their cause.

You can turn a blind eye to the downtrodden, but you cannot keep We The People from seeing their plight.

You can extol the virtues of those who pretend to be righteous, but you cannot prevent the inevitable exposure of their hypocrisy.

You can play the part of the king and his court, but you cannot fool the audience into accepting the utter ridiculousness of your roles.

You can proclaim your legacy as those who will be remembered, but you will live in infamy as those whose utter incompetence will never be forgotten.

You can do your best to destroy us as a nation, but your best is nothing more than a failure waiting to happen.

We are the American people. We have withstood a civil war and two world wars, depression and recession, floods and dust-bowls, natural disasters, disasters contrived by enemies, and disasters born of incompetence, corruption and greed – and yet we have survived.

We will not be undone by any one man, by any one army, any one plot, any one act of foolishness, false patriotism, or treasonous betrayal.

And we will certainly not be undone by an incoherent wannabe-cowboy, a snarling, money-grubbing old man, and a handful of incompetent, corrupt, lying yes-men.

End of discussion.

For Metta - my friend, my confidant, my muse.

1. Recommended.
Nicely written as always -- and with the heart of a fighter to back it up.

Thank you, my friend.

3. Ya know, Nance, as the election comes nearer to November 08,
I'm glad we have a field of good candidates to choose from for our nominee in Denver, but even more grateful we have good people in the rank and file - and some with passion and talent - and by that I direct readers to your posts. If they want to know what a model citizen is, and are looking for one to work with in their district, you'd provide them with the proper example.

Please hang around a bunch of new volunteers, whether old and doing politics for the first time or brand new out of college -- doesn't matter -- so long as they see something permanent and valuable at work in the personality and range of one person.

I've read your posts with pleasure now for a while on DU and I ain't stoppin' readin' 'em any time soon.

Go, team.

4. Thank you once again.
My favorite: "We are the American people. We have withstood a civil war and two world wars, depression and recession, floods and dust-bowls, natural disasters, disasters contrived by enemies, and disasters born of incompetence, corruption and greed – and yet we have survived."

And we WILL survive this corruption.

6. Welcome to the family ...
... my Aussie friend!

Surely we look foolish at times (especially lately!), but we Americans -- for all of our faults - have a tendency to make things right in the end.

Hope to see you again soon, avrdream! :hi:

7. Thanks Nance.
John Howard doesn't come across much better than our cowboy president but at least he speaks better. Both are on their way out - Bush because of term limits and Howard because the Australian people are finally seeing the light (hopefully just like the Americans will).

13. Junior's Legacy
http://www.jainmeditation.org/pages/anecdote38.html

THIS EXCERPT IS FROM ONE OF JAIN MASTER CHITRABHANUJI'S TALKS

HITLER'S ASTROLOGER

Adolph Hitler believed in astrology and sought the advice of Europe's most famous astrologer.
"I am a devout Christian and want to die peacefully. Will you tell me where and when will I die?"
The astrologer thought for a moment and answered, "You will die on a Jewish holiday."
In an angry outburst, Hitler rose and answered vehemently, "How could I die on a Jewish holiday?"
The astrologer replied, "Any day that you die will be a holiday for Jewish people."

HE WHO DID NOT GIVE PEACE, WANTS TO DIE PEACEFULLY

15. Nancy you always cover all the point in your post so that
I never have anything to add. I always feel so much better for reading your posts. On Friday I was at a local festival. There was a booth from Nova Scotia. While I was studding the map of Novia Scotia, I was approached and asked if I had any questions? I did. I asked if he knew where my family village was. He immediately knew. He showed me the village and explained that they lived there for 150 years until the king of england became afraid of them and made them swear allegiance to his crown. My ancestors said no, and were tossed off their land. They came to America and settled in Louisiana. Well we know how that worked for them. King George wanted their land too. Reading your post is reflective of my family roots. Thanks for being another kindred spirtit.

16. Problem is, we're fucked...
This ain't the old America.

The New Americans have no will.

We've gone soft.

I wonder what the ratio of fighters to typers we have here.

You can scream through your keyboard, but can you take it to the streets? And I am not talking about putting on "Impeach Now" teeshirts and walking around with a bunch of cute signs.

'cause screaming don't make no difference, you know. Only adds to the confusion.

How many here would be comfortable watching blood run down the gutter?

And that's what it's gonna take.

17. K&R. Perhaps it is time to actually THANK BushCo…..
for reminding us what American Democracy is really about, reminding us of the importance of our “original” Constitution, and a renewed determination for the American Dream..., it still lives in every line of your rants and in every DU’er.

19. First I thought Nance Was the Next Molly Ivins...
telling truth to power in a lady-like fashion....

then she got better, and I nominated her for the next Tom Paine, American patriot and rabble rouser....

and now, well, she's got to be up there with Buddha, Jesus, and other spiritual leaders of all time.

The world is a better place, and we have a chance because Nance Greggs writes!

24. Did you consider?
Using the word forgiven in lieu of forgotten? These people ride the whole salvation gravy train trail and might think they would be forgiven by God and/or country. Not a chance.

"You can proclaim your legacy as those who will be remembered, but you will live in infamy as those whose utter incompetence will never be forgotten."?

26. Dang, I Got Goosebumps Again
This past week has been hard reading of more corruption and lies and I was feeling lower than a angelworm's tummy. Then I read your rant. You always inspire me and although the fight is a long and tough one, we will win it. The power of your words motivate and give hope to many battle fatigued liberals. I will fight the fight again today.
