My 16 year old wants to get involved in the primaries (again)!
When she was 12, she worked tirelessly with me on the Dean campaign, and even traveled to Iowa to knock on doors in the snow. She wrote countless letters, updated voter databases, made posters, and generally stayed involved until the end. It was a great experience for her, probably as much about wanting to bond with me as it was about the actual election, but she's a smart kid and she understood a lot of it.

But then hormones hit, and cell phones with texting, and MySpace, and boys, and High School...She hasn't done anything politically active with me in years. I knew I had planted a seed, though, and that she would probably come back around in her college years, so I didn't pester her about it.

Yesterday she overheard me talking to some friends about the candidate I'm supporting, and while she didn't say anything then, today she asked me if she could work on the campaign with me. She said, "I just want to get involved."

1. YES!!!!
You know, the kids and the elderly are the ones who give me the most hope.

Next time you hug the child, hug her for me, too, please?

I'm just so surprised. She's a great, loving and mostly well-behaved kid but she's been pretty self-obsessed these past couple of years, which I've chalked up to her age. I didn't figure she'd take the initiative and ask to get involved.
