The arrest of an Omaha grade-school teacher accused of possessing heroin is one of only a handful of heroin-related arrests made in Omaha each year.

Police say each heroin case carries significant personal ramifications.

"It's a drug that we take very seriously because of the pain and destruction it causes," said Sgt. Dave Bianchi of the Omaha Police Department's narcotics unit. "It's by no means an experimental drug. It's hard-core."

Krista Crosby, a 34-year-old Omaha Public Schools teacher, was charged Friday with possession of a controlled substance after being accused of having heroin at school. Crosby was starting her third year at Florence Elementary, 7902 N. 36th St.

Crosby cried softly when she entered the jail courtroom Friday for her bail hearing. Douglas County Judge Jeffrey Marcuzzo set her bail at $25,000. She posted 10 percent, or $2,500, later in the day and was released.

A woman who answered the door at Crosby's home Friday night declined to comment.
