As Craig feels heat, Vitter stays cool
Source: Times Picayune, New Orleans

"Republican politicians moved quickly this week to condemn Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from his alleged solicitation of an undercover officer in a Minneapolis airport men's room.

But the same Republicans were notably mum on the admission by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., in July to having called a Washington, D.C., escort service whose proprietor is under federal investigation for allegedly running a prostitution ring.

The different responses have some suggesting a double standard, based on societal discomfort with homosexuality and others questioning whether it had more to do with political calculations. "

snip

"An ethics watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said that in terms of their ability to hold a Senate seat, there is no significant difference between what Craig and Vitter admitted to."

1. I just emailed my senators about Vitter, so I'm sure they'll get right on it.
Cornyn and Hutchison.

*sigh*

5. Craig was not in danger of being replaced with a Democrat
Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 12:14 PM by rocknation
Vitter is, so it wouldn't matter if he'd admitted to eating a baby.

Even their double standards have double standards--Party Uber Alles!

10. It's really the difference between being an un-closeted gay senator from Idaho
and a senator from Louisiana who employed the (somewhat exotic, although I don't think that part is documented) services of a call-girl. Craig's constituents are much less likely to forgive him for being gay than Vitter's (a much more laid back crowd) are to forgive him for hiring a prostitute. In Louisiana, no one really expects politicians to be above that sort of thing. It's a very tolerant state in that regard. The issue is really the Senate's own ethics rules, and its willingness to enforce them. Vitter should be censured at the very least for conduct unbecoming a U.S. senator.

9. Question on Vitter...
Did Vitter plead guilty to anything?
I heard a pundit explain it this AM that the reason Craig's story wouldn't go away was because he actually plead guilty to the charge then tried to cover it up.

Doesn't mean the Vitter and others don't need to be brought to justice but is there a guilty plea or conviction to nail him with?

11. I don't believe he's been charged with a crime.
Though he did admit to having sex with a prostitute, and has been forgiven by his family. And God, of course.

17. Mostly because he's gay.
And the governer of Idaho is a Republican. And the electorate of Idaho is highly unlikely to elect a non-Republican to the Senate any time soon. Better for Craig to go away. Move along, folks. Show's over.

26. Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a WINNAH!
If Craig was from a state with a (D) governor, he's be sitting just as pretty as Vitter is. The Publican party does not want to lose yet another seat.

(Well, until the 2008 landslide elections go against them, anyway.)

14. Would the Republicans have been so quick to run Craig out if Idaho's governor was a Dem?
I doubt it.

Now, they get to have a new Repub appointed to that Senate seat who will run for reelection in 2008 as a quasi-incumbent.

If Vitter left the Dems would pick up a Repub seat and have a Democrat to run in 2008 as a quasi incumbent.

16. Candidate for this month's "You Call This NEWS?" award?
Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 01:41 PM by rocknation
Oh, come now--if authors of this story are REALLY that naive, they never would have written this:

...Sen. John McCain...urged Craig on Wednesday to resign the Senate seat...(He)...spoke for many Republican officials...(who) are worried that Craig could lose the GOP seat to a Democrat in a state that gave President Bush 68 percent of its vote in 2004.

It stands to reason, doesn't it, that if the Repubs are worried about losing Craig's seat to a Dem, they must be even MORE worried about losing Vitter's seat to a Dem? The difference is that while the Repubs were willing to dump Craig because Idaho's governor will replace him with another Republican, they're NOT willing to dump Vitter because Louisiana's governor will most likely replace him with a Democrat. Yet that aspect of the story never occurred to them? TORD TURD!

18. DING DING DING!!!
"The difference is that while the Repubs were willing to dump Craig because Idaho's Republican governor will replace him with another Republican, they're NOT willing to dump Vitter because Louisiana's governor would most likely replace him with a Democrat."

I think that's exactly what's behind this double standard of treatment by Congressional Republicans of Vitter and Craig. It's ultimately about holding onto their seats in the Senate. You absolutely hit the nail on the head.

:grr:

19. IMO it's the difference between 'sex' and 'gay sex'
... GOPerverts and their constituencies are nonplussed by affairs (unless, of course, your name is Clinton) but have to get all up-in-arms and react quickly to 'gay' relationships/affairs/ accusations to keep the fundie base pacified.

24. One of the big differences is Vitter fessed up
He alerted the GOP before the news broke, so they were prepared.

Craig tried to sweep it under the rug, and told no one. The GOP was blindsided, and needless to say pretty pissed off.

I think the main thing is Craig is still trying to pass the same ol' bullshit off, and making a complete ass of himself.

30. Yes. Vitter's situation was different: happened years ago; mea culpa and confession; AND...
he met with the GOP leaders and did what they said to do to try to make the situation go away.

Very different scenario for Craig.

That aside, I DO think the homosexual aspect had an impact, after the Foley scandal last year, especially, which some believe had something to do with losses in Congress.
