New Report Finds Family Farmers And Ranchers Burdened By Medical Costs And Debts - 09/07/07

By Doug Cunningham

Workers aren’t the only ones struggling with inadequate and costly health insurance. According to a survey done in seven plains states by the Access Project, farmers and ranchers are struggling with the high cost of health insurance and are burdened by medical debt. The Access Project’s Andrew Cohen says the lesson for policymakers here is that with 47 million people uninsured in the U.S., even those with insurance are not adequately covered.

: “We want to encourage policy makers to look beyond just enrolling the uninsured in insurance products, but to make sure that those products are comprehensive and actually help people improve their ability to access health care when they need it. And also to protect them from financial ruin."
