For Thompson, goal is to don Reagan mantle (positions himself as "ideological, stylistic heir")

Fred D. Thompson had one central strategic goal as he formally began his presidential campaign on Thursday: to win over conservatives who are disheartened at their current choice of Republican candidates by positioning himself as the ideological and stylistic heir of Ronald Reagan.

Mr. Thompson is certainly conservative, and has been throughout his public life — particularly on the question of federalism, the size of government, tax cuts and his unwavering support for the war in Iraq.

Biographically and stylistically, Mr. Thompson, another former actor trying to become president, recalls the easygoing manner that Reagan used to advocate conservative solutions to the nation’s challenges, as he made clear with his announcement speech in Des Moines on Thursday. He spoke of “common-sense conservative beliefs,” including the notion that “we still get our basic rights from God, not government.”

Yet in some notable ways, Mr. Thompson is different from Reagan, and he has at times deviated from the orthodox conservatism that Reagan, after his death and nearly two decades removed from his presidency, has come to represent.

2. This is getting good can't wait till next debate
Thompson is another lion in the den. My husband said I was sick because I can't wait to see them rip each other apart. I also found it strange that Bill Clinton was on Larry King and had not one bad word for Thompson I think he is thinking the same as I. It going to be fun to watch.

Not another politician who doesn't do his homework! This country was NOT founded on the principles of Christianity! The Founding Fathers wanted government and religion to stay separate. :banghead:

6. the debates WILL be fun
especially since Thompson is notoriously lazy, famously unfocused, hates doing "homework" and will show up at the debate, I'm sure, unprepared with nothing but thin talking points and full of angry, condescending bluster when someone points out the fact that he doesn't know his elbow from his a**hole.

11. The Creature from the Black Lagoon will grab the other
Republican candidates by the feet and pull them under the dark waters. After eating them raw he will drink a bottle of Jack Daniels, smoke a cuban cigar and bone a woman four times younger than he is. After he is captured by scientist, he will be caged and studied.
He will escape and capture a young girl, carrying her limp body to his cave. He then escapes and drowns in the black lagoon of politics because his gills were injured in a fire. :dem:

.... was obvious to me the first time I heard him speak politics.

This guy is our bete noir, make no mistake about it. America is just as ready for that bullshit as it was in 1980, just for different reasons.

20. GOP voters are stupid enough to buy it
They love images over reality. That's why they like the actors.

Bush strutting around on a carrier in a costume...
Ronnie Raygun pretending to be tough and in charge while in fact he was demented...
Senator Craig pretending to be straight....

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3502643&mesg_id=3502643

It's a pretty good piece from the "Bush's Brain" author, discussing how the new Bush book is the first step in a revisionist history of Junior's presidency, painting him as a fearless commander-in-chief on 9/11 instead of the quivering frat boy hiding out in a Florida elementary school.

27. The GOP Hurt Themselves by trying to make everyone
a Ronald Regan. There was one Regan and they accomplished
a lot of Myths about him. Many ex-Gopers felt hoodwinked by
Regan. Many people do not vote anymore or have become Democrats.

Regan was one Republican who managed to stay popular.

He never pandered to the RR. Regan had been a Democrat
all his life. He had been a "UNION LEADER". This gave
him a a beadth of understanding the Average American and
how to deal with them----no GOPer is going to be able
to do this.

You find candidates who might have a trait here and there,

Huckabee has the Congeniality trait---he makes his digs
with humor and not meanspitedness.

Guilliani has the intensity , gravitas qujotient.

Fred is an actor.

Let the GOP keep trying to fool people. The truth is they
had their Regan. His time is gone.

Fred Thompson is no Ronald Regan.
