This is one hell of a distraction from that which is important.I hope everyone realizes that by chasing our tails like this we make KKKarl very happy! And that may well have been the point of the entire thing! Sheesh. And I thought the ANS stuff was bad...

3. Maybe a Moderator can combine all the posts.
It is annoying when posts about the same topic crowd out other posts.

8. May be a distraction from "more important" things. But...
especially in the face of so much, massive shit that is going on, it is something that everyone has experience with and can directly, personally relate to.

Who has not had a run-in with a cop in which you were abused (to some extent)? The traffic cop who feels up your girlfriend. The beat cop who just does not like the way you look. The thugs in cars who love to pretend to run you down when you cross the street.

Couple the shared experience we all have with an important issue like freedom of speech, etc. and you have a lot of interest.

And we have as much chance for justice in dealing with the police as we do of getting George to end the war. It just seems simpler.

Jump on the story du jour, then misrepresent it, misquote it, omit context, and beat it to death.

Repeat, repeat, repeat!

10. There is something terribly wrong with this country
and this episode is the tip of the iceberg.

We drastically need to change course, don't you think? and it starts with Americans looking out for eachother. When we turn our backs on a student who is tasered for asking questions, what does it say about US?

Just yesterday people were bemoaning "where's the outrage!!!!". This kid was outraged, agree or disagree with him, and people roll over saying he deserved his taser.

13. The student was not tasered for "asking questions" no one else got tasered for
"asking questions' He got tasered for behaving as though he were off his rocker, being beligerant and looking like a"potential threat" to a United States Senator.I still don't think he should have been "tasered" but they were correct to remove him.He did not seem rational.

15. Kerry should publicly repent
for sitting by like the rest of that cowardly auditorium full of people and not scream at those cops to stop the torture.

And we think these bastard Senators will really repeal the tasering of our Habeas Corpus rights?

18. Hey, I just heard on Ed Shultz
that Kerry HAS made a public statement condemning what went on. Good for him--a little late, but at least he's showing a little bit of humanity.

As for you, suggesting that encouraging a Senator to do the right thing is "swiftboating", I can't fathom what you're talking about.

Really. And Kerry's statement has nothing do do with condoning torture.

20. What the
hell are you talking about? Kerry has publicly condemned what he witnessed. It just took him a while to react like a human being--maybe he was in shock while it was happening as he stood there answering the guys question while he was being tortured by the U of F cops.

29. He could not see the guy - who had been moved to very rear of
a huge auditorium. He was also down on the ground between the last two rows of seats. At that distance he was too far away to see any detail like that even if his view were not obscured and the stage lights preventing him from seeing.

28. a little late - this became an issue yesterday
He had the comment out this morning and a Dkos diary by his netroots coordinator with more details on what Kerry saw. They also seemed to get this out to the media resulting in sveral fair stories. He actually has work in the Senate to do as well. Not to mention flying back to DC. This was handled very quickly.

Kerry did not see the cops taser him. He gave the guy far more chance to get and receive an answer than he would get from many other politicians. As the story develops, this guy looks less and less well intentioned - his goal was disruption - he would have been tombstoned here before he even got near Kerry.

27. Kerry did not see the man tasered.
He personally gave the man time to ask the questions and could have gotten an answer if he would have acted like a mature reasonable person. Many of the students were quoted as having felt alarmed by his behavior.

BREAKING*** DEMS IN SENATE SAY NO TO COMPROMISE
Democrats Won't Temper Iraq Legislation
By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

(09-18) 13:15 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

After weeks of suggesting Democrats would temper their approach to Iraq legislation in a bid to attract more Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid declared abruptly Tuesday that he had no plans to do so.

The Democratic leader said he will call for a vote this month on several anti-war proposals, including one by Sen. Carl Levin that would insist President Bush end U.S. combat next summer. The proposals would be mandatory and not leave Bush wiggle room, said Reid, D-Nev.

"There (are) no goals. It's all definite timelines," he told reporters of the planned legislation.

Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Monday night he would have agreed to turn the summer deadline into a nonbinding goal if doing so meant attracting enough votes to pass. Several Republicans have said they are uneasy about Bush's war strategy but do not like the idea of setting a firm timetable on troop withdrawals.

Reid's hardline stance reflects a calculation by Democrats that Levin's proposal probably would have failed either way. Democrats hold a thin majority in the Senate and similar legislation has repeatedly fallen short of the 60 votes needed to break a GOP filibuster.
