Why all the love for a possible hate crime?
i dont understand this at all. i have been reading the details of this horrific incident in gena. a white kid was knocked senseless then while he is laying helpless on the ground as many as 6 blacks allegedly proceeded to kick him viciously in the head. what if the situation were reversed? what if 6 whites did that to a muslim student?

as far as i am concerned, if these thugs did this horrific crime of hate they should rot in prison. i have no sympathy for them at all.

3. It was a high school fight. Would they have been charged with attempted
murder if they were white kids? Probably not.

The fact is that they beat someone (who had previously attacked one of the black kids). It is a question of equal treatment under the law.

You conveniently extract this incident out of the entire chain of events that led up to it, and have occurred after it.

Nice.

4. LOL fer chrissake
You could at least TRY. It's an art form, and you aren't very good at it.

Here's a clue. You don't see right wing talking heads babbling about Jena because it's INDEFENSIBLE. Try a different topic. You might be able to pull it off.

9. Why don't you try to educate yourself first.

Several white kids DID beat up one black boy before this incident. They weren't prosecuted.

The white kid who got beat up attended a party later that day. The black kids were charged and locked up and one had an initial charge of attempted murder (which was later reduced).

And the white kid who got beat up was mocking the black kid who was beaten up before.

If you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, it's best not to start a thread about it.

10. Which, of course, justifies beating him senseless?
Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 01:07 PM by Donald Ian Rankin
I *don't know* whether or not the charge of attempted murder is justified. I don't see how anyone else on DU can either. I'm quite prepared to believe that that it isn't, but not that one can confidently conclude that on the information I've seen.

I am worried by the knee-jerk assumption that it wasn't, which appears to be based in most cases on little more than the races of those involved.

Even if it wasn't attempted murder, I think that a prison sentence of some length is probably appropriate.

I don't think the preceding racial tensions should be seen as a mitigating factor.

11. He was beaten so senseless that he went to a party that night.
It's not about letting them off the hook. It's about EQUAL TREATMENT.

"The noose-hanging incident and the DA's visit to the school set the stage for everything that followed. Racial tension escalated over the next couple of months, and on November 30, the main academic building of Jena High School was burned down in an unsolved fire. Later the same weekend, a black student was beaten up by white students at a party.

The next day, black students at a convenience store were threatened by a young white man with a shotgun. They wrestled the gun from him and ran away. While no charges were filed against the white man, the students were arrested for the theft of the gun.

That Monday at school, a white student, who had been a vocal supporter of the students who hung the nooses, taunted the black student who was beaten up at the off-campus party and allegedly called several black students "nigger." After lunch, he was knocked down, punched and kicked by black students. He was taken to the hospital but was released and was well enough to go to a social event that evening."
