NPR story this morning.
Concerning electrical tower south of Bagdad down since last Summer. It supplied most of power to Southern Bagdad. It is finally back up after extreme difficulty. The bid was given to several Iraq contractors who were threatened. Some who went to the location were shot at.

Finally 300 Iraqi troops were sent for security, along with American troops to clear roads. They did'nt know how long it would stay up.It will probably require a Battalion of Iraqi troops stationed at each tower to keep them up.

1. When I was in Baghdad in 2003-2004, a plan had been . . .
talked about to rehire the lower ranks of the disbanded Iraqi army as an "Infrastructure Protection Corps," stationing squads of them around the country so that the power lines and plants, oil pipelines, bridges, etc., could be constantly guarded -- thereby proving to the people that their government-in-creation would indeed bring a better life than what they'd experienced under Saddam.

I guess that idea was quashed too.
