Democrats are in the majority, where they belong. Thank goodness the bad old days of Hastert, etc, are over.

5. She's better than Hastert,
but the war goes on, impeachment's 'off the table' and we've caved on the FISA bill. She's done some good, hell Gonzo's gone, but hasn't moved against the current regime anywhere near as hard as she could.

I'd give here a C- or D+ for her speakership so far.

You'd be wrong, but I'm SUPPOSING that its not the fist time.

I was pointing out the posters' over the top resemblance to a cheerleader in light of recent events that can be summarized as non-victories. But you are too entrenched to take it as it was meant, and you suppose that anyone who does not think like you is a republican troll.

I guess its because a symbolic opposition is better than none. Sure DK has not been very effective, as a coalition builder. If there was a mover/shaker politician who was really connected with the progressive caucus, and the other important liberal groups that'd be ideal, and I'd give my support to Russ Feingold for instance... but until then I'll vote for someone whom I feel best represents my stance on the big issues like health care(single payer), and to get out of Iraq. When that person loses, I will vote for the dem even if the nominee is Clinton, much as I dislike "the presidency being passed around between the Clintons and the Bushes like it was a party joint." (Thanks Mos Def!)

Cheers

61. Agreed,
I'd much prefer a clean break from Bush/Clinton, but I'll vote for her if she's my only choice. We know that ANY Repub will DEFINITELY be a continuation of Bush. People like Kucinich and Feingold have a much better chance at getting the ear of an HRC than they would say a Rudy or a Mittsy.

I'm pissed with Kucinich right now, his vote in SCHIP pissed me off good. There's a time to take a stand and a time to compromise for the betterment. He seems not to know the difference. There's a time for antagonizing and a time for unity. Let a Dem President get into office, then he can antagonize all he wants.

63. Had not seen the SCHIP vote
I hadn't followed his vote, I'll look into it more. I expect that tactic has something to do with trying to exercise some of his influence now, instead of waiting until after election.

As I said though I'm sober about his prospects, which is why I wont defend him on the typical metrics the "top 3 tier" are judged on. So I think it is a bit of a double standard.

40. See what you imply is that in order to be a democrat
that we all have to support, unconditionally, every person that has a D behind their name. I can support Pelosi, but think that she hasn't quite lived up to what the people elected her for. Disagreeing with someone doesn't necessarly mean you don't support them. That is what you obviously don't understand. I disagree with my husband sometimes, but I always support him.

Would you agree with that??

28. And what has Pelosi and the Dem majority done with their majority?
Oh yeah, meaningless gestures and empty posturing. Goes along with failing to stop the war too, in direct contradiction of their constituents wishes.

Hell, the 'Pugs are still kicking Dem's spineless ass, and they're in the minority. You think this is all a great thing? Gee, mighty low expectations you have there.

and anything less than that is not good enough for many people around here. I'm not exactly sure how they were supposed to accomplish that in 6 months, but that's the way it is. Most of those same people seem to think that Cindy Sheehan or Dennis Kucinich could have done it.

35. Being in the majority, the Dems have the power of the purse
They could hold up each and every supplemental funding bill in committee, defund the war and bring the troops home. If they had done that last spring, the troops would be well on their way home right now. Instead, Pelosi took the defunding option off the table before this Congress was even seated. This is in direct contradiction of the mandate the American people gave the party last fall, get us out of Iraq ASAP. Instead of bringing the troops home, they've merely offered up meaningless resolutions, mouthed pious excuses, and continued to support the death of innocents.

Before you go saying that the American people wouldn't support defunding the war, check this out.
<http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/030107_Bush_Iraq_Iran_web.pdf> Note, this is a Faux poll, not exactly a bed of raging liberalism.

Sorry, but there are no excuses, just a lack of spine and the desire to play politics with the lives of innocents. This is why, despite the weakness of the 'Pugs right now, that the Dems could very well go down to defeat next fall. Too many people are starting to see their role in the two party/same corporate master system of government, and are thoroughly disgusted by it.

42. Why are Democratic leaders alienating many Democrats?
They (the Dem elites such as Pelosi, Reid, Rahm Emmanuel, etc) want the 2008 election (and Hillary elected) so bad that they think that doing nothing is better than doing something and that they will be held accountable.

The big question is do the Democrats really want to end the war now or do they want to use the war?

Pissed off party members is not good for election turnout. CSPAN Wash Journal had some discussion on this and many democrats called in saying they weren't sure if they wanted to vote in 2008 based upon what is happening in Congress, and with Hillary voting to go along with Bush again only this time on Iran. There is lots of frustration with Congress and with some of the Dem presidential candidates and leaders. Corporate toady is a term that comes to mind for many.

53. I think they want both..
I think they want to end the war, and I think they also want the 2008 elections. I'm a Democrat and I'm frustrated, I'm sure they're frustrated too. Look what they're dealing with in the White House. A delusional moron and an evil warlord. Plus obstructionist repubs at every turn.

But I do think that they have made strides in making the Bush Admin accountable. Oversight had been non-existent for six years, you don't just waltz in, snap your fingers, and make all of it go away in six months. That's the way I see it. They're struggling, but they've had some small victories. I'm willing to give them longer than six months to prove themselves.

There is no excuse for any Democrat to vote for the Iran Resolution, I agree. I haven't heard a good explanation from any who voted for it.
