Could You Pass the New Citizenship Test?

MSNBC has the new citizenship test on line. Could you pass this test?
I took it and got 96%. I missed one. the one about how many admendments are in the constitution.
What would your score be?

easier than the ORAL test I took back in the day... which included silly things like listing the first 13 colonies... believe you me, when you are doing this in front of an INS officer who is truly looking for a reason to flunk you, it is nerve wracking...

Oral exams can be tough as it is.

of course there were some parts of the process that are still part of the process that are down right funny

I wonder how many of my fellow native born Americans could make it thru such an examination.

They had a list of "subversive" organizations that I couldn't be a member of or I couldn't enlist. One of them was "The Imperial Japanese Kamikaze Pilot's Survivors Association"-I kid you not.

The court system, voting rights act, discrimination, labor laws, freedom of press, speech, religion - you know, the stuff we'd really like new citizens to be thoroughly familiar with. Or at least I would.

Oh, yeah, those nazis were born here...

Took about 7 minutes because I had to go back to two of the questions.

about the number of amendments, too. Otherwise I got them all

Which means the test is fairly easy for those of us who were born here.

It is easy for people who know the history et al

My local news station has done that from time to time and the results are down right embarrasing

Ever watch Jay Leno's "Jaywalking"? Of course, if you're on DU you're already smarter than average.

With 1776 so ingrained, I could see a mistake there.

I had to think about that one for a second.

In other papers, the examples were open response questions, which makes the test harder?

.. they are now obsolete.

E.g. --

11. What is the economic system in the United States?*

I would answer, truthfully, corporofascist. The right answer is either: capitalist economy or market economy


12. What is the “rule of law”?

I would have answered that the rule of law no longer applies to the rich or to anyone heading the government of the corporofascist power structure. It also applies unfairly and brutally to the minority, poor, and working classes.

The right answer is any or one of the following: Everyone must follow the law. Leaders must obey the law. Government must obey the law. No one is above the law.


I would fail this test simply because I am a good, thoughtful, observant, and knowledgeable citizen of the USA.

Socialism for the rich and the military...

Freebooter capitalism for the rest of us...

years reps are elected for - i did not remember that every rep was up for re-election in 2006? i thought it was four years with elections staggered. oh, well.

the multiple choice makes this absurdly easy.

The only one I had to think about was the one you missed.

These questions really don't reflect the ideals of being an American. Other than knowing when to vote, I don't see how any of this makes a better citizen.

I mixed up the term limits for Reps and Senators... :shrug:

These questions are, for most part, pretty trivial. Should a person be denied citizenship because he or she didn't know Woodrow Wilson was president during World War I? The civics questions are fairly important, but when you consider half of native-born Americans don't vote anyway, they are kind of irrelevant to citizenship.

I guessed 12 justices, d'oh me, and dumb mistake, marked 50 Senators instead of 100...thinking 50 states :silly:

I had to laugh a little at the "What is the National Anthem?" question. Only about 60% (that number may actually be lower) of natural citizens can name it!

Although it screwed up on the WWII president answer. If I check FDR, it says I checked woodrow wilson.

had changed three of my answers to the incorrect ones. Crappy scripting.
