"Who likes Hillary & who doesn't" - monster Gallup poll (sample size 7K+)

Who Likes Hillary Clinton, and Who Doesn't?
Party and ideology most important; little matters beyond that

by Frank Newport and Joseph Carroll

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans' opinions about New York Sen. and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton mirror the underlying partisan divide in the American population today. According to an analysis of a special aggregated sample of more than 7,000 interviews in which Americans were asked to rate Clinton, all conducted between June and September of this year, the public is split precisely down the middle when asked whether its opinions of Clinton are favorable or unfavorable.

Forty-eight percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Clinton, while 48% have an unfavorable opinion. Only 4% don't have an opinion of Clinton, making her one of the nation's most well-recognized (and polarizing) political figures.

But just who is most likely to have a favorable opinion of Clinton, and who is least likely to have a favorable opinion?

To help answer that question, Gallup analyzed opinions of Clinton among a large number of subgroups of the American population, based on age, gender, education, race, region, church attendance, income, marital status, partisanship, and ideology. All of the results are from the large 7,000-case sample of interviews conducted from June through September.

Here are Gallup's charts

3. Interesting: 80% of liberal Democrats and 74% of liberals, in general.
DU and the country in general would appear to be a tad out of sync.

21. It was the same in 2003-2004.
I worked for the Kerry campaign, and lots of people (not just DUers) laughed in my face...

Until Iowa, that is.

I'm surprised how many Republicans view her favorably. I thought every one of them hated her with
a purple passion.

25. Agreed. I was surprised by that, as well.
Her crossover appeal to independents and conservatives is stronger than I would have expected.

7. But would they vote for her
If they had a choice would they vote for her, that is the question. I may have a favorable opinion of her, but I wouldn't vote for her if given another choice. It seems they are REALLY trying to herd us cats toward Clinton.

8. Actually the converse seems true, people may not like her but they will vote for her.
As evidenced by her winning head to heads vs GOPers with higher net approval ratings.

11. Considering that 3 out of 10 Democrats don't find Edwards or Obama favorable.
I would say she is doing quite fine.

"Clinton has the highest net favorable rating among Democrats at +71. Gore's net favorable rating is +56, which isn't much different from Edwards' +53. Obama's is slightly lower, at +45."

This is from a Gallup article in early Aug

Looking at Gore's numbers when he isn't even running. One would think if he did actually decide to jump in he would do pretty well.

28. 2 out of 10 Democrats think Adam & Eve rode dinosaurs.
Dawgs, your bias is showing by the way you phrased it:

"Why is it good news for Hillary that 2 out of every 10 DEMOCRATS don't find her favorable?"

80% find her favorable - even before the Primary??? That's great news for Clinton!

Have fun playing!

10. I would respond 'favorable' in such a poll,
and would answer that way for any of the dem candidates. That doesn't translate to primary support, though.

It would be interesting to see what number each individual demographic constitutes of the total electorate. That might be instructive when assessing her GE odds.

Interesting stats. Thanks for posting.

13. Just read through the summary analysis and saw a couple of interesting points
Republicans and Republican Leaners

The average favorable rating of Clinton among this group of Republicans is a very low 16%. Note that the small group of Republicans who describe themselves as liberals (just 131 out of the more than 7,000 respondents in the data set being analyzed for this project) is, on a relative basis, the most positive about Clinton. Otherwise, all but a few of the remaining subgroups are within 10 points of the sample average. Republicans who are most positive about Clinton include those who don't attend church, moderates or liberals, those who are younger, those who are not married, and those living in the East. Republicans who are least positive about Clinton include older men and conservatives.

Bottom Line

Hillary Clinton is one of a group of starkly polarizing figures on the American political scene today. Exactly as many Americans have a favorable opinion as have an unfavorable opinion of the New York senator, and only a small percentage don't have an opinion at all.

Clinton's lengthy presence in the public eye and her strong identification as a Democrat -- going back to her eight years in the Democratic White House of her husband Bill -- have led to a situation in which the public appears to evaluate her largely through a political and ideological lens. One's political party and ideological identification are overwhelmingly the most important predictors of where one stands on Clinton. Once these variables are taken into account, there is only modest variation in opinions of Clinton based on such traditional variables as age, gender, socioeconomic status, and region of the country. One exception is race; even among Democrats, blacks are substantially above average in their positive opinions of Clinton.

As many of us have been pointing out, she is indeed very polarizing. That could spell real trouble for us in the general election, as I think she would likely do more to rally the republican base than any other candidate on either side.

24. I live in the South and among my friends and associates, not one person
likes Hillary (male or female). It must be noted that I live in a very small town and it's not as though my circle of acquaintances is large, by any means. And I'm sure there are several in my area who do support her, but...

What's interesting is that they don't like her for DUMB reasons, like the "I don't stay home and bake cookies" remark -- or whatever she said. Nothing about their stance on her policies, voting records, any valid reasons with which to view a candidate, but it seems totally personal. I was very surprised discover this.

22. Redux: if you hate her, you're scum. I must be one of the 20% of Liberal Democrats...
Much as my mouth is dry, my feet claylike and my fingers strangely paralyzed at the concept of inkablotting for her 13 months from now, I'll probably choke back my revulsion and vote for her then.

Still, even here after the outrageous groundswell and fanfare of her fabulous campaign, a full 48% can't stand her. From Gallup, a hideously right-slanted propaganda tool fronted by the ridiculous monarchist poltroon Frank Newport, this leads us skeptics to believe that they want us to think that her unfavorables are MERELY almost insurmountable.

The mind reels.

If people were screaming against the wind for someone who had a scrap of integrity, the risk might be worth it, but to risk an important election for a self-serving, monomaniacal ultramoderate is sheer folly.
