Challenge to the Biden Bunch! Post your guy's accomplishments!
Biden supporters tell DU what your guy has done that either makes you proud or want to vote for him or anything that you just think is important for other DUers to know.

And please keep in mind this is supposed to be a positive thread about a candidate's accomplishments.

There are plenty of other threads to bash the various candidates in.

I am planning on doing one of these everyday. Tomorrow will the House of Dodd will be given a go.

I have previously done threads for

Edwards - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x3569018

& Richardson - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3572045&mesg_id=3572045

1. Thank you for this series of posts
It is very helpful for those who are still deciding and gives us all a chance to present positive viewpoints without a lot of bashing.

I been an admirer of Joe Biden's for several years now. He appears to be the best choice for this particular time in our history. Though he is knowledgeable on many issues, his strong foreign affairs experience is vital right now. All the domestic issues cannot be fully addressed until there is a reasonable resolution to the war in Iraq.

Joe Biden tells me the hard truth, not necessarily what he thinks they want to hear. This is a gamble for any politician, but it is what sets in apart from many politicians.

34 years in the senate has its pros and its cons, as he has a long voting record to scrutinize and pick apart, but there is an overall consistency of values, knowledge, and judgment that I find impressive.

We have a great line up of candidates to choose from, but I think Biden stands out from the rest.

3. Busy right now but here are the first few that come to mind:
1972 - First Bill Biden introduces is a public financing of elections Bill. Ever since the beginning Biden was aware of how money plays too important a role in politics.

early 80's: Biden along with Pat Moynahan and Bob Dole reach pass a deal on extending social security through 2050-something. Since then, that legislation has been undone and the social security is now in jeopardy again.

In 1994, he authored the landmark legislation that helped set up shelters and a national hotline where women who are abused by husbands or boyfriends can get help. It also increased the court system's abilities to protect women who are being stalked.
The legislation has given hundreds of thousands of women a second chance and a way out. Since it passed, both domestic violence and incidents of rape are significantly down nationwide. For two decades, Joe Biden has been instrumental in crafting many of America's most important crime laws. In 1994, the Biden Crime Law put more than 100,000 cops on America's streets, and crime went down eight years in a row. The law requires communities to be notified when convicted sex offenders move into a neighborhood.

But after President Bush started slashing billions of dollars from federal crime-prevention assistance for state and local law enforcement, crime started going up again. Joe wants to add 50,000 new local cops and 1,000 FBI agents to focus on local crimes.

He was the leader (he pushed Clinton to act) in the U.S. interference in the Balkans and the Dayton accords which stopped a genocide and brought peace to the Balkans.

THE BIG ONE: LAST WEEK 75-23 the Senate voted in favor of Biden's federal solution to Iraq. read more about it at.
www.planforiraq.com and Biden/Gelb's defense of the plan at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/02/AR2007100201824.html?hpid=opinionsbox1

HE LEAD the effort to get MRAP Humvees built when most other politicians were ignoring the scarcity of them in Iraq. These humvees reduce deaths from IED's by 70%. 70%!

General Stuff I can't come up with specifics for but you can with research:

* Biden is well-known as the best foreign policy mind in the Democratic Party. Just watch Tom HArkin's introduction of Biden in Iowa recently.
Biden has one of the best voting records in terms of the environment, this is evidence by much legislation.
Biden is married to a school teacher. He recently introduced a bill to to reduce class sizes nationwide and introduced legislation to help all those deserving go to college, so that college is no longer a "luxury good" in this country.
He has introduced legislation to rebuild the nation's failing infrastructure.
Biden stopped Robert Bork from being appointed to the Supreme Court in the late 80's. He also voted against Thomas, Roberts, and Alito. He voted against Alberto Gonzalez's appointment.

The list goes on and on. I have to go back to work. This is only the tip of the Iceberg, though. Please look Biden over, all you undecideds!

I might return with more stuff...

6. Here's a just a few that stand out

Biden’s Iraq plan scores Senate win

The Senate found its first bipartisan consensus on the Iraq war Wednesday, dealing a minor rebuke to the Bush administration and a major boost to Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.).

Two of Biden’s presidential rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Chris Dodd (Conn.), joined with fellow Democrats to back the political remedy for Iraq that he has promoted for more than a year. Biden’s amendment calling for a decentralized Iraqi government passed 75-23 and won over 26 Republicans.

Biden billed his vision of diverse federal regions in Iraq as a strong challenge to President Bush’s war policy, and Democratic leaders who were cool to the plan earlier this year declared Wednesday that the new Congress finally had prodded Bush toward a new approach to Iraq.

“It’s an achievement by Congress,” said Sen. John Warner (R-Va.).

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) missed the vote on Biden’s plan as well as a vote on Iran offered by Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), both of which were added to the defense authorization bill. Obama’s office has said he would likely support the Biden language.

The Bush administration previously has opposed a mandate for federalizing the Iraqi government, but the State Department did not comment publicly Wednesday on Biden’s plan.

Meanwhile, every Democratic leader backed Kyl’s amendment on Iraq, which called for Tehran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps to be designated a terrorist group. More incendiary language referring to the use of “all instruments of U.S. power in Iraq” to block Iran’s activities was dropped from the amendment, but Biden and Dodd still opposed the language. The amendment passed 76-22.

Clinton supported the Iran amendment, exposing her to continued criticism from anti-war groups active in the Democratic presidential primary.

The Biden Crime Law

Since coming to the Senate, Biden has written some of the most innovative and far-reaching criminal justice proposals in recent history, including the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, also known as the Biden Crime Law, which was signed by the President in 1994. The law is responsible for putting more than 100,000 additional police officers on the streets; assisting states in building prisons and boot camps to make punishing crime more cost-effective; helping fund "drug courts" that combine intensive supervision, drug testing and treatment for non-violent first offenders; and supporting existing juvenile crime prevention programs that are proven successes. The law also banned 19 of the deadliest assault weapons and their copies and increased penalties for interstate gun trafficking and for using semiautomatic weapons in violent or drug trafficking offenses. The Biden Crime Law has been widely credited with the dramatic drop in crime rates during the 1990s.

Preventing Violence Against Women

Included in the 1994 Crime Law is Senator Biden's landmark Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which is the first federal law to address gender-based crimes in a comprehensive way. This bill strengthened federal penalties for abusers, stalkers, and repeat sex offenders and provided over $3.8 billion to states to fund battered women’s shelters, train police, prosecutors and nurses, and established a national domestic violence hotline. Senator Biden also authored the widely acclaimed Violence Against Women Act of 2000. In addition to extending many of the successful programs from the original Violence Against Women Act, VAWA 2000 includes $1 billion to help prosecutors track down domestic abusers, $875 million to expand shelters for battered women and their children, $200 million for legal assistance for victims and $140 million to stop violence against women on college campuses.

Preventing Genocide

Through his work on the Foreign Relations Committee, Biden has sought to promote the use of American power to stop dictators who commit crimes against humanity or genocide. In the 1990s, Biden was among the first to call for active American leadership to end Serbian aggression in Bosnia, and likewise urged U.S. action in Kosovo to stop Slobodon Milosevic’s genocidal actions there. He has urged strong U.S. and international action to prevent genocide in Darfur, and authored legislation to engage NATO and provide additional sanctions to pressure the Sudanese regime.

Strengthening U.S. Diplomacy

Biden has worked across party lines to strengthen American diplomacy. In the late 1990s, he joined with Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jesse Helms on legislation to reorganize the government’s foreign policy agencies, and co-authored the landmark "Helms-Biden" legislation authorizing the payment of nearly $1 billion in back dues owed to the United Nations, contingent on U.N. reforms. Senator Biden also has been leader in expanding U.S. radio and television broadcasting into the Muslim world to explain U.S. policies and counter anti-American propaganda.
Senator Biden’s legislative interests have focused on a wide range of foreign policy issues, including arms control and non-proliferation, European security, the Middle East peace process, and international narcotics policy. He has traveled widely during his Senate career and meets regularly with visiting heads of state and foreign ministers.

7. OK- here it is!
Biden's career has impressed me. His amount of experience and his compassion for his family, people, and politics is what attracted me to him.
He's been a Senator as we all know since 1973. He's also the Chairman of the FRC. He has seen the mistake of Vietnam War, the WaterGate and Iran-Contra scandals, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany, the disintegration of the Soviet Union, 9/11, a presidential impeachment, a presidential resignation, and a presidential election, decided by the Supreme Court.
He's observed Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and 2 Bushes. He's traveled to war zones in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He's played a vital role in stopping Milosevic's genocide in the Balkans. He stood up to Ronald Reagan and stopped Bork's from getting on the Supreme Court. He also created the Violence Against Women Act in the 90's that Bill Clinton finally passed. He also helped in reducing the crime rate w/ putting more cops on the street that Bush later slashed.
As a man he has my utmost repsect- he's had his share of personel tragedy as we all know. Losing his wife and child at 29 just elected Senator and to overcome that and keep his head up and raise 2 small boys on his own w/ his sister's help is remarkable. Never mind surviving a ruptured brain aneurysm that resulted in a pulmonary embolism from the brain surgery and having a 2nd brain aneurysm surgery 6 weeks later. Biden is now completely recovered! Biden has taken his personal experiences and it has made him even stronger. He appreciates life, his family, and most of all us- as American Citizens. And would be one of the most remarkable Presidents we have ever had since JFK.
facts from this post were taken from Promises to Keep- Biden's book.

8. Thanks for this opportunity!
My take on Joe Biden is that he's a genuinely good person, has integrity, and is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy. I'm presenting SOME of the legislation he has Sponsored (list doesn't include all the resolutions he's co-sponsored) to support my opinion. This is in no way complete in ANY of these areas, but they serve to set the tone of the kind of person I believe him to be, and why I feel he is our best choice for President.

(These are from the 109th and 110th Congresses ONLY. His entire record was too daunting to for me to even attempt to condense)

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/WOMENS' RIGHTS/VICTIMS'RIGHTS
- Biden authored the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 1994
- S.1515 : A bill to establish a domestic violence volunteer attorney network to represent domestic violence victims.
- S.AMDT.528 to S.CON.RES.21 To increase funding by $100 million for the Violence Against Women Act
- S.RES.93 : A resolution supporting the goals of "International Women's Day".
- S.RES.24 : A resolution designating January 2007 as "National Stalking Awareness Month

ENVIRONMENT/ENERGY (He's also introduced funding for lithium-ion battery energy research, but I can't find it)
- S.RES.30 : A resolution expressing the sense of the Senate regarding the need for the United States to address global climate change
- S.1562 : A bill to direct the Secretary of Energy to provide grants to States for the distribution of compact fluorescent lights.

MILITARY/VETERANS
- S.1044 : A bill to improve the medical care of members of the Armed Forces and veterans
-S.AMDT.739 to H.R.1591 To appropriate an additional $1,500,000,000 for Procurement, Marine Corps, to accelerate the procurement of an additional 2,500 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles for the Armed Forces.
-S.RES.155 : A resolution designating the week of November 6 through November 12, 2005, as "National Veterans Awareness Week" to emphasize the need to develop educational programs regarding the contributions of veterans to the country

HEALTH
- S.RES.116 : A resolution designating May 2007 as "National Autoimmune Diseases Awareness Month" and supporting efforts to increase awareness of autoimmune diseases and increase funding for autoimmune disease research
- S.RES.256 : A resolution designating June 2007 as "National Aphasia Awareness Month" and supporting efforts to increase awareness
- S.2855 : A bill to amend the Safe Drinking Water Act to eliminate security risks by replacing the use of extremely hazardous gaseous chemicals with inherently safer technologies

EDUCATION
- Biden rates among the highest in education support. Too many to list, but here's one:
- S.1399 : A bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to combine the Hope Scholarship Credit and the deduction for qualified tuition and related expenses into a refundable college affordability and creating chances for educational success for students (ACCESS) credit, to establish an Early Federal Pell Grant Commitment Demonstration Program, and to increase the maximum Federal Pell Grant Award.

GLOBAL/HUMAN RIGHTS
- SEVERAL on Darfur: Here are two:
- S.RES.383 : A resolution calling on the President to take immediate steps to help improve the security situation in Darfur, Sudan, with an emphasis on civilian protection
-S.RES.276 : A resolution calling for the urgent deployment of a robust and effective multinational peacekeeping mission with sufficient size, resources, leadership, and mandate to protect civilians in Darfur, Sudan, and for efforts to strengthen the renewal of a just and inclusive peace process._
- S.RES.142 : A resolution observing Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day
- S.1709 : A bill to amend the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act of 1998 to provide additional staff and oversight of funds to carry out the Act (I don't really know what this is, but it sounds like a human rights issue to me!)

DRUGS (Yeah, I know, but these indicate to me a willingness to be fair and also supportive of those who are addicted)
- S.1711 : A bill to target cocaine kingpins and address sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine
- S.1011 : A bill to change the name of the National Institute on Drug Abuse to the National Institute on Diseases of Addiction and to change the name of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to the National Institute on Alcohol Disorders and Health.

IN SUPPORT OF OUR COPS
- S.368 : A bill to amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to enhance the COPS ON THE BEAT grant program

If you'd like to continue to be impressed, here's a link to Biden's Senate site, and that has a link to the Library of Congress where all these and more are recorded.

23. When I was looking up the legislation he's sponsored I was struck by the
fact that these guys -- or Biden, anyway -- work HARD! We sometimes have the impression that they're sitting at their desks, feet up, smoking a big fat stogie while getting a manicure, or down in the Senate massage room, or out at some hip insiders restaurant or hob nobbing with the elite, but I realized how inaccurate that is while viewing his contributions. Especially Biden, who takes the train to and from work daily which I think I heard adds another 2 or so hours to his day. I'm exhausted even thinking about it.

16. He doesn't pander. He will tell you the truth, even if it's not what you want to hear.
When he talks about healthcare he says it doesn't matter who has the best plan.
What matters according to Biden is your ability to overcome the republicans calling it socialism.
He's right.

When he addressed a GLBT group in Iowa, they asked him if he supported same-sex marriage.
He answered that one day same-sex couples will be allowed to be married, but in the meantime there are still alot of
prejudices they have to overcome. He then told them to look how far they have come over the past 10 years, and that will continute. He congratulated them for the progress they made.

Even tho he is campaigning his heart out, he is still getting legislation to the Senate floor.
Li-ion batteries for cars; MRAPs for our troops; his plan for Iraq; smaller classrooms - more teachers; help for Darfur...I'm forgetting some! You cannot say the same for Hillary, Barack or Chris.

He told Wolf Blitzer in a debate that Iran is years away from building a missle, and that we have plenty of time to work on a diplomatic solution with them. He said he didn't vote for the Kyl/Lieberman amendment because he would never trust this administration again.

and he has a great sense of humor. Called Bush braindead. His comment to Rudy at the last debate. His comment about the baby at the YouTube debate.

He is intelligent, honest, able to work well with members of both parties, and is the most experienced candidate in foreign affairs.

When Kerry was running for President, I saw a clip of Biden on C-span giving a group of reporters he11 about the swiftboat liars.
He was really letting them have it for talking about a war hero that way.

Come to think of it - maybe that's why Biden doesn't get any press? Maybe the reporters are afraid of him? lol.

That was my moment - the moment when I said to myself - I hope he runs for President next time. And he did.

31. Thanks so much for these rinsd. I was able to respond
for Richardson and I'm enjoying reading these on Biden. I still don't know why Biden and Dodd aren't polling better right now. Well, maybe it has to do with the press, I don't know. Anyway, thanks to the Biden supporters as well.

In the past week alone, Biden has done more for America than have all of his rivals over their entire careers!

In the past week alone:

1. Joe Biden demonstrates his skills as a statesmen, leader and problem solver by prompting the United States Senate to pass the Biden-Brownback-Boxer amendment by a vote of 75 to 23. This marks the first time since the Iraq war begin that a majority of Republicans abandoned the failed policies of the leader of their party, the President.

Could Hillary or Obama or John have pulled that off? Not on your life!

Joe Biden leads the senate to approve by unanimous consent his resolution calling for an investigation into the death of a political leader in Lebanon.

Could Hillary or Obama or John have pulled that off? Not on your life!

Joe Biden's amendment to the defense bill passes the Senate, requiring that $26 billion be spent on supplying our troops with the most up-to-date and effective vehicles against IED attacks, the MRAP's, which reduce casualties by 68 to 80%. You keep them safe while you work on bringing them home. It isn't an either/or situation. As an American President, you must do both.

Could Hillary or Obama or John have pulled that off? Not on your life!

Senators Joe Biden and Tom Carper (both of Delaware) lead the senate to approve their amendment to the water resources bill, causing the Senate to finally take some action to prevent catastrophic damage to our nation's port cities from natural disasters.

Could Hillary or Obama or John have pulled that off? Not on your life!

Senators Biden and Kennedy gain the unanimous consent of the Senate in approving their amendment top the defense bill requiring the Pentagon be held to account for the deaths and injuries of our servicemen and servicewomen serving in Iraq and Afghanistan by reporting to Congress what measures were taken to reduce the number of casualies and prevent needless deaths.

Could Hillary or Obama or John have pulled that off? Not on your life!

Senator Biden introduces legislation to Congress that calls for $2 billion to be devoted to reducing class size in America's schools by hiring 100,000 new teachers.

Did Hillary or Obama take such action to help America's schools? No!

The facts show that Joe Biden is the most effective leader this nation has seen in many generations. The guy never stops working. He does his job and still finds time to run a campaign that is moving ahead in the polls.

Senator Obama, on the other hand, makes speaches in which he says that he, and I quote, "is running against the way Washington conducts politics. Yeah, Barack, but the way you do it is by not showing up to do your job, having missed many critical votes in just the past week. That's going against the grain, all right.

Look at Biden's record--AND THAT'S JUST IN THE PAST WEEK!--and it will be easy to see why it is that Biden's supporters know--not merely believe . . . but know!--that Joe Biden is the best person for the job of leader of this country and the free world.

41. There've been several decades of liberal votes by Senator Biden. He's
strong on foreign policy, as is generally acknowledged.

Biden reads poetry.

Poetry, in one definition, is language distilled to its essence. The raw plunge of classical education values into the outhouse pit of the Bush White House, and the subsequent press conferences Bush has given -- most of them incoherent, fractal, posturing, dishonest, and unlistenable -- is more than just a contrast n style; it's a defeat of substance.

Biden finds the essence in language and uses it to re-frame and expand the landscape of consideration.

I would look forward to a Biden State of the Union address. I've been sickened by every one of Bush's.

44. Bush's State of the Union addresses
were painful to watch. He was so shifty - I would end of yelling at the TV, "Liar" numerous times. In each one he'd bring up some weird subject like "switch grasses" and I'd be completely amazed that he was so out of touch.

48. Oh my, maybe that echo I kept hearing was you!
I don't yell as much I as I used to though. Now I just flip him off on a regular basis.I takes less energy and I can't find any words vile enough to throw out there anymore. I've used up my arsenal of adjectives, I may have to make up some new ones.

49. Yep. The remote control is our friend.
It long ago reached the point where I just could no longer listen to the little fool chattering like a magpie on crack, making no sense at all some of the time and lying through his teeth the rest of the time.

Let's hold the Iowa caucus next Tuesday, want to?

50. I'm game!
Bush is like a highway accident. I want to just turn him off, but I have to watch and listen. Part of it is I don't want to ever, ever forget. I want the image of him always in my mind, lest I should be inclined to become apathetic or complacent.
