U.S. protests shrink while antiwar sentiment grows

By Andy SullivanWed Oct 3, 8:33 AM ET

Crowds at antiwar rallies in Washington have dwindled even as U.S. opinion has turned against the war in Iraq, as organizers feud and participants question the effectiveness of the street protests.

Rival antiwar groups, which in years past jointly sponsored massive rallies on the National Mall, have promoted separate protests recently or decided to steer clear of the capital altogether.

The thinning crowds stand in contrast to the antiwar protests of the Vietnam era, which grew as the war progressed.

Activists and experts say divisions among peace groups, along with other factors like the lack of a draft, fatigue about the war and the rise of the Internet, have all contributed to the declining turnout.

1. Please give an example of "COINTELPRO"
From what I have seen A.N.S.W.E.R. has been dumped by the other anti-war groups for their questionable associations and tactics.

4. Read Agents of Repression.

Read all about the tactics used to turn the anti-war groups against each other during the Viet Nam period and start comparing them to what's happening now.
The details won't come out until people compare what's been happening within their groups with known Provocateur tactics used then, but you can be sure there is an active program underway and from what I read, it is working.

5. So it's just a hunch. Nothing you have provided including your OP
has any proof or even examples of "COINTELPRO!" causing a decline in the anti-war protests.

8. Police dressing as protesters has caused a decline in the anti-war
movement?

9. They provoke confrontations with police
Yes, it will affect protests when an undercover policeman starts a pretend fight with the cops to give them an excuse to start busting heads. Not a lot of people want to go marching in the street if they are assured a beat-down by riot police. It also works to discredit the movement when they are presented as violent nutjobs in the media.

11. Provoking confrontations is not their only trick
They infiltrate groups and actually work towards the groups goals.Or so it appears. What they are actually doing is building up goodwill in the group so they can assume positions of trust and responsibility.Which they then abuse.
The DLC is a good example of this.

3. Also, they are completely ignored or dismissed as nobodys by the media
If they aren't completely ignored, the most you can expect for your trouble protesting is getting pepper sprayed or beaten by a cop while the media cheers it on.

12. We Native Americans know all about
COINTELPRO. Just research what happened in the early 1970's to AIM members--especially at Pine Ridge & Wounded Knee. I was 17 at the time and grew up real fast.

14. The book Agents of Repression goes into it in great detail,
with documentation and a lot of research. The people who wrote it back it up with facts.

16. Absolutely
Actually, Jim VanderWall, one of the authors, used to be my neighbor as a kid. His mom and my parents were great friends until they all passed. Jim is a terrific guy. The book is outstanding. Thanks for mentioning it.
